What is Colorguard?

Colorguard can be found in a lot of American high schools, and universities/colleges. It is a mix of using props, and dance, along with music. It started off by accompanying the marching band. Color Guard and the Marching Band usually perform as a halftime show for football games. Now, colorguard has evolved into a separate activity, called Winter Guard (what I am in) which is an indoor sport, where the guard performs without the band. Since they don’t play with the band, they perform to pre-recorded music. Winter Guards compete independently in circuits as Winter Guard International (WGI), or Tournament Indoor Association (TIA.)

Winter Guard International

WGI Sport of the Arts is the world’s premier organization producing winter guard, percussion, and wind ensemble competitions. It is a non-profit youth organization, and they serve as the leading governing body of indoor winter guard, percussion, and winds activities. It is called, and considered a sport of the arts, because it brings music to life through performance in a competitive format. It is its 39th year, and the sport keeps on evolving and growing.

Oregon Shadow Winter Guard

In Oregon, there are two different groups of Winter Guard. There is a Cadet group (grades 4-8) and a group for high schoolers. Not everybody in winter guard is from Oregon. There are people who drive from different parts of the state, to come to practices, and to participate in competitions.

Nick Lane is not only the executive director, program coordinator, and visual designer... he is also the band teacher at the high school. He has been directing the Shadow family for many years, and he is a very likable person! If it wasn't for him, there would be not shadow family.

Fine Arts Week

Wednesday, April 6th, 6am-4:30pm

Oregon, WI, United States

Oregon, WI

Fine Arts week is when we go to all of the schools in the Oregon School District. Both of the guards, and the shadow indoor percussion perform for all of the schools. After we go to a few of the schools, we all eat outside, and take a little bit of a break from performing. This year we are coming to the schools on April 6th.
