Puster Families,

Yesterday's Valentine festivities were so fun! Thank you for getting creative with the parking. I'm sorry to say we had a few cars get stuck in the back field after the morning rain. Thank you to Office Emory, Coach Hill and Puster parent Mr. Tassan for throwing it in 4 wheel drive and lending a helping hand!

REMINDER: Tomorrow, 2/16 is an early release day at noon. Please make any necessary dismissal changes in School Dismissal Manager. Friday. 2/17 is a student holiday. Both days, our staff will be engaging in professional development.

REMINDER: Monday, 2/20 is a bad weather make-up day and school is IN session! We are excited our 4th graders will have the opportunity to "bump-up" to 5th grade and spend the day at Sloan Creek!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Puster Proud,

Holly

Attendance Updates

Attendance continues to be a top priority for Lovejoy ISD. It should come as no surprise that attendance has a direct relationship with student learning. Additionally, public school funding is provided by the State of Texas based on each district's average daily attendance (ADA).

Lovejoy has developed an Attendance Task Force consisting of staff, parents, and students to formulate ideas about how to positively impact ADA in our district. One suggestion is to update the community via weekly principal communication on the number of absences each campus has accrued YTD along with the budgetary impact of those absences. This information can be found below:

Ariel Stewart, Library Media Specialist

Ariel is a ray of sunshine at Puster. She is a huge part of building a positive culture on our campus. She has built a great STEM/Library program for our students and is constantly learning. She truly knows our students as individuals and works to motivate them to learn.

Pat Panmanee, Student Nutrition

Pat works whenever, whatever, wherever needed. She loves the kids and goes out of her way with each individual student. She pays attention to their needs and wants and remembers them when they come through the cafeteria.

News from Mrs. George

Parents,

Just a reminder that school begins at 7:55 am. Students should be in their seats at 7:55 when the bell rings. In the event you are running late, a parent should walk the student into the front office to sign them in. Please let the office staff know if you have any questions.

Testing season is upon us. Students identified as English Language Learners will be participating in TELPAS assessment during a five week window in February. More information on specific testing dates will be coming soon.

STAAR dates for third and fourth grade are listed below. Please schedule appointments around these dates.

Notes from the Library

Library stats:

1,540 titles have circulated so far for this month.

27,057 titles have circulated so far for this year!

One of my favorite parts of my job is to share my love of reading with students and help them grow as a lifelong reader, in partnership with families. I am here to help match the right books to the right reader. We practice previewing interesting books to make sure it is a good fit for them as a reader, and help redirect with books that are aimed at other age levels in our Kinder-4th grade school.

Lovejoy ISD currently offers students access to digital library books through SORA. The District has the ability to curate the collection of books accessible to students through the SORA platform. However, publishers at times have included external links with the digital books, similar to what is found in some hardcopy books. These external links are not maintained by the District and are not a material within the control of the District. The District neither selects the external links nor endorses the specific links. The District believes the online SORA platform is a beneficial program and will continue to allow students whose parents agree to utilize the resources.

In the spirit of transparency, the District is notifying parents of their right to opt out of the use of the SORA platform for their children. If you elect to not have your child access digital books through SORA, please contact your campus librarian.

As a reminder, parents may access a list of digital books their children have checked out by following the steps noted below.

Sora How-To for Parents: https://tinyurl.com/lisdsorahowto

Every Friday at 4:00 a “weekly notification” email from Lovejoy ISD Library System should go out with the current physical titles your student has checked out from the Puster Library.

Students also have access to Ebooks and audiobooks through Sora by overdrive. You can login to Sora to access the digital books your child has checked out.

Read Across America Week: Feb 27-March 3

The book fair is just 1 week away!

In case you haven’t heard, our Puster book fair opens Monday February 27th at 7:30. We will close Friday March 3rd at 12. Students may shop before school, during their library time and during other times their teacher allows. We will be open late on Thursday March 2nd from 4:00-6:45 if you want to pop in and shop after school and then see our 4th Grade program. We accept cash, cards or the easiest, safest method, a book fair gift card!

Buy a book fair gift card here: https://efairs.literati.com/product-category/gift-cards/

In the hands of students, digital gift cards are a safe and easy payment method that won’t get lost in a backpack. They make great gifts for teachers!

Gift cards can be purchased from your online fair at efairs.literati.com. Customers can buy gift cards in person as well, so long as they have the recipient’s email address at checkout.

HOW THEY WORK

  • Purchase online at https://efairs.literati.com/product-category/gift-cards/ or purchase gift cards at checkout, the customer enters in a recipient’s email address.

  • A gift card code is then sent to the recipient’s email inbox.

  • To redeem, the cashier scans the gift card code at checkout, or the recipient inputs the code themselves online.

Gift cards never expire, so students and teachers can use any remaining funds on their next Literati Book Fair!

Teacher book fair wishlists are a great way for the community to give back to their teachers. This year, there will be a teacher wishlist ticket stand full of colorful wishlist tickets. These tickets give you the flexibility to buy your teacher a book or a book fair gift card.

Can’t make it in? Try our Online Companion Fair https://efairs.literati.com/books/ and select Puster Elementary. Our online fair allows the whole community to shop our book fair, including those who aren’t able to visit in person. Online companion fairs feature an expanded catalog of books, giving you a bigger array of titles to choose from. That way everyone can find a new favorite read!

When our book fair ends, our online fair will close and all online purchases will be added to our total book fair sales. Then they will ship our school’s online book orders, which should arrive at our school within 10 days, depending on carrier transit times. Shipments will contain a packing list with teacher and student names, I will then distribute orders.

Literati Kids Book Clubs

This ongoing fundraiser helps students build essential reading skills all year long. For students, it’s like getting a book fair in a box every month—one that’s curated just for them. sign up at literati.com/schools.

HOW IT WORKS

Our personalized book curation begins with a child’s reading pace and preferences and improves as they pick out and review their favorite stories. Once they sign up:

  • Members get five custom-curated books, delivered monthly.

  • They only buy their favorites with free and easy returns.

  • 10% of every dollar spent will always go back to your school.

Children's author Kevin O'Malley is coming to Lovejoy ISD!

Puster Elementary Thursday, March 2nd

We are very excited to read his books and learn what it is like to write and publish original stories. If your student would like to have Mr. O’Malley sign a book(s), please purchase any of his books that you would like. Send them into the library and he will sign them on the day of his visit.

ART NEWS

It has been an incredible year so far in our Puster Art Studio! From our kindergartners making their own brushes to create expressive self-portraits to our 4th graders making paper to build books; we have had wonderful experiences so far this year! In celebration of our Puster Studio and I am excited to announce the 1st annual Puster Art Tie-Dye Fundraiser! Each artist, friend, and family member who participates will receive a "PUSTER ART" T-shirt that was designed by 6 of our Puster Alumni, and they will be able to Tie Dye on April 25th from 4:00-6:00pm. This event will be a great time for our artists to create their own personal PUSTER ART shirt with their families, friends, and anyone else who would like to join. Each shirt for the Tie Dye event is $15, with all proceeds helping fund our Puster studio with the tools and fine art materials that support our K-4 artists and make our Puster art experience unlike any other! It promises to be a ton of fun, so make sure and sign up before all of the spots are filled!
