The SoRoCo Weekly Newsletter
November 6, 2016
Dear Team,
We had another productive Friday - yes, I know - the third in a row - but now we're back on track with every other Friday off. Thank you for the openness, honesty, and endurance portrayed in our four-hour long talking circle. During the opening activity, it was extremely heart-warming to hear many of you express your gratitude toward each other. Our students we always love and appreciate, but to feel that sense of trust and camaraderie among each other is unique.
Now, as a unified staff, we have the training to be able to use that camaraderie to hold our students accountable, and teach them right from wrong in a manner centered around relationships and respect. Consider that the word "discipline" originates from the Latin word disciplina, which means "instruction," and derives from the root discere, which means "to learn." Discipline, therefore, is intended to TEACH our students, so that they internalize the negative effects of their misbehavior on our community, rather than PUNISH our students, so that they become better at hiding their misbehavior.
Thank you again for your hard work and dedication to our students and each other!
