Disappearing Elements

Manganese is used in magnets, batteries, and ceramics. Magnets that have manganese hold the potential to double the strength in regular magnets. The lithium-ion battery uses manganese, and it doubles the life of batteries while increasing electrical outlets. Manganese can also be ground to powder and is used in the glaze to put on the clay. Manganese is important to a number of animal species because it is important to the cartilage and bone. Manganese helps form blood clotting and is necessary for metabolism of carbohydrates, fat, amino acids and cholesterol. Photosynthesis is dependent on manganese. During photosynthesis, manganese is what transfers water molecules into oxygen. If manganese were to suddenly disappear, those animal species will look abnormal and all plants would die.

Today, praseodymium is used to strengthen magnets and metals, nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries, and floodlights. It is used to make magnets stronger. The high powered magnets are used to make wind turbines and hybrid cars. When mixed, praseodymium and magnesium can create a high strength metal for aircraft engines. Praseodymium is also used in nickel metal hydride that is required for rechargeable batteries. Combining praseodymium and mischmetal makes carbon arc lights that are used in the motion picture industry. Without praseodymium there would be inefficient wind turbines, airplanes will be heavier, and hybrid cars would consume more gas. Small devices would have to use a different battery and movies would look different due to lighting.
