Tuesday 13 September
Tēnā koutou katoa,
This week is Māori Language Week and there are lots of resources to access online including this website. Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is a popular, government-sponsored initiative promoting the use of Māori language. At Whitney Street School we are trying hard to be part of the broader Māori language revival and to help with public awareness for Māori language revitalization, learning, and public usage. If you are able to support the management team, teachers or students with te reo, please get in touch!
‘Kia kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia kaha te reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

Whitney Street Gate Safety - PLEASE BE CAREFUL
We are very concerned with the way children are crossing the road at the Whitney St gate entrance after school. Parents are reporting near misses as children run across the road, sometimes without looking, to meet caregivers waiting on Percy Street in their cars.
We also have the added problem of cars parking on the yellow lines and obscuring the vision of children trying to cross the road. To ensure the safety of all please:
Meet your children at the gate rather than have them cross the road on their own, especially if they are young
Do not stop on the yellow lines
Lights Over Marlborough - Volunteers Required Please Saturday 12 November 2022
Please return the pink volunteer form that was sent home last Friday indicating if you can help at Lights Over Marlborough on Saturday 12 November. Alternatively, you can email your class teacher or Cheryl (firstname.lastname@example.org). A digital copy of the notice home is here and we have sent it via our school app. For quick reference, the stalls which generally run from 5:30pm - 9pm are listed below. Thank you very much in anticipation.
Out of Zone Placements for 2023
With our large cohort of Y6 students (79 of them) heading off to intermediate at the end of the year, our roll will drop quite a bit so we will have places for 25 Out of Zone children. These places include siblings of students who are already in our school but do not live in our catchment area. If you know of any families who may be interested in attending Whitney Street next year please direct them to our website, or get them to ring Cheryl on 027 321 8022.
Calendar Art - Your children are in the process of creating a masterpiece!
This is an annual school fundraiser. The money we make goes towards classroom resources. Your child’s pictures can be turned into calendars, cards and/or diaries. These are perfect Christmas or birthday presents or just a nice keepsake, featuring your child’s artwork. The artwork will be displayed in your child’s class at the beginning of next week from 19 September, and some has already been shared via Seesaw. You are welcome to pop into classrooms and have a look.
An order form will be sent home next Monday and needs to be returned to the school office with payment by next Friday (23 Sept). They will be ready in Term 4.
Community Breakfast - Friday 23 September
Our next Community Breakfast is being held on Friday 23 September rather than the last Friday of term as classes are away on camp then. This is a wonderful community event, and a great opportunity to meet other families in a relaxed atmosphere. Save the date in your diaries.
Te Noho Tahi (Being Together) Creative Kids Project
All our students took part in singing and moving to ‘Walking on Sunshine’ as part of the Creative Kids Te Noho Tahi (Being Together) Project with most Marlborough schools. Whitney Street School was videoed a week or so ago, and will be combined with other schools to produce a professional video which we will share with our communities.
Ki pai i ō koutou rā - have a good day everyone.
Ngā mihi nui,
The Whitney Street School Staff
We are proud to share...

Free Period Products for Girls
If your Whitney Street School daughter has her period, she is eligible for two packs of free period products per month. These will be available to her when you let Christee Dalzell know via email (email@example.com), by leaving a wee note on her desk or by contacting the school office.
Hopefully, this initiative is utilised really well by our Whitney kōtiro/girls! We have figured out a system where the students are able to easily access these in an inconspicuous way.
This is a brilliant way to save money on the grocery bill so please take advantage of it.
If you have any questions, please feel free to pop in and talk to Christee.
Download our school App
We encourage all parents to download our school app from the Playstore or Apple Store, as we find this the most effective way of sending out Alerts to parents/caregivers. You can also access a wealth of information from the app as it has links to the school calendar, newsletters, etc.
Please subscribe to Alerts from the classes/groups that your child belongs to. If you want to subscribe to groups later on, you can do this via the ‘Alerts Subscriptions’ which is in the Menu (top left). Please do this to ensure you are subscribed to the classes and Teams that your child or children are in for this school year.
This is also the way we would like you to inform us of absences. This system streamlines the morning routine for Tanya and Michelle so that they can easily see who is away and why.

Kia ora Team
Active Dads Nelson & Active Dads Marlborough are delighted to let you know about 3 online parenting presentations with Dr Bradley Hannigan.
These online presentations are held over 3 consecutive Wednesday evenings, and are FREE!
