Hall of Fame
The inaugural Westview Hall of Fame Banquet went extremely well. We are excited to continue this tradition of recognizing past students and staff who have left on impact during their time at Westview and beyond.
Big thank you to Chef Wong and her culinary students who cooked 100 three-course meals to perfection! Thank you to Ben Prange and our student government for welcoming guests, serving and clearing tables. Bobby Rathbone and the Jazz Band played us into the evening and really helped set the tone. A final thank you to our Hall of Fame Committee of Troy, CJ, Luke, Ronda, and Nancy.
Connecting with those who have graduated and bringing them back into our community is very important. Their speeches were full of past and present teacher names and stories about how Westview shaped their lives. Thank you!
Make-A-Wish

Westview Student Wins Congressional App Challenge
Sanjana IIango, a junior at Westview High School was named the winner of the 2019 Congressional App Challenge by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici.
Members of the U.S. House of Representatives host district-wide Congressional App Challenges for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science.
Every year they challenge students in their districts to create and submit their original apps for a chance to win the Congressional App Challenge (CAC). Each challenge is district-specific. U.S. Representatives publicly recognize their winning teams and each winning app may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year.
Congratulations, Sanjana!
Westview HS Chetana Club Supports Beaverton HELP Center
The Westview High School Chetana Club collected and donated 50 $10 Starbucks gift cards to the Beaverton School District HELP Center last month.
The Chetana Club's mission is to spread happiness through 'sangha seva' (sanskrit word for 'selfless service to community'). Helping people from all walks of life regardless of race, religion, income levels, cultural and political beliefs is a key driver for Chetana volunteers who have been actively undertaking several social welfare programs to help local communities.
Thank you, Westview Chetana Club!

Info Graphics
As students process information, sometimes a visual format is the best way for them to present it. Though AdobeSpark Post (available from the GooglePlay store on their Chromebooks) is great for awesome graphic designs, it doesn’t do justice for graphs, data, or analytics. One thing you may want to have them try is Infogram (see the image, right). With plenty of templates to try, students can create visually stunning projects in minutes. Need help to get started, let me know.
Tech Thirty
It is a new semester, and most likely a new time to update your Canvas course for Semester 2. Need some help with the import? Stop by Monday during grade day from 1p-3p or Thursday after school and we can get you all squared away.
Library:
SUN JAN 26 | 1-4 PM
Human Library: Unjudge Someone, Beaverton City Library, 12325 S.W. 5th St.
Instead of print books, a Human Library is a library where people from your very own community become “open books,” sharing their stories with Readers (that's you!) who “check them out” for a short time to listen and dialogue. This one-day event offers participants the opportunity to sit down with a real person to ask curious questions and have honest conversations. The Human Library uses the power of these conversations to forge connections, dispel stereotypes, and better understand each other in order to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities.

Phishing Emails
Phishing Increase and Change to BSD Email Access
As we enter the holiday season, a recent report stated phishing activity has increased more than 400% from the first two weeks of November. For staff personally, attackers know online shopping increases and they design mock Amazon emails, text message giveaways, and other message designed to get our usernames, passwords, and even credit card information.
Cyber criminals also know that many school districts largely shut down over winter break so they are increasing their attacks against us as well. If you suspect any email of being a phish, please forward it to phishing@beaverton.k12.or.us so we can test. If it is a phish, we can automatically remove the message from all other mailboxes. In addition to protecting your account, forwarding it to IT could protect many others.
Many of our attacks come from machines located outside the United States. To make it more difficult for attackers to access any compromised account, we have implemented Geo-fencing on all Beaverton School District email accounts. This means that you will only be able to log into your email account from a location within the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii).
Many organizations have implemented Geo-fencing as one way to protect compromised accounts. It slows down the attackers ability to access the account, which gives us more time to identify the account and alert the staff member. If you will be traveling outside the United States and want to access email, simply put in an IT Help Desk ticket stating your destination and travel dates. We can create an exemption for you.
More information is available on our intranet page.
