COUNSELOR'S CORNER WITH MRS. MONTE
I am so excited for all that we have to come in January for our social and emotional lessons (SEL). We will continue talking about how to manage strong feelings and will use those skills to move into skills such as self-control, respect, friendship, and problem-solving. It is hard to do those things without knowing how to cope with our feelings first. Here are the topics that we will be covering by grade level.
Kindergarten: Respecting Personal Space, Body Calming Skills, Taking a Break, Showing Kindness, and Why Kindness?
Kindergarteners will practice managing their emotions by taking a break and learning new skills to calm their minds. Learning those skills will help them to better respect and have positive relationships with themselves and their peers. This leads to our other lessons about respecting personal space, being kind, and understanding why we should show kindness.
First Grade: Helpful vs Unhelpful Coping Skills, Listening vs. Blurting, Bounce vs. Splat (Moving on from a problem), The Power of Kind Acts, and Ways to be Kind
First graders will review the skills that they have learned to cope with a problem. They will have the chance to see how some ways that we may choose to cope are unhelpful for calming us down. They will also learn how to bounce instead of splat! We will use this analogy to learn how to move on from a problem instead of letting it ruin our whole day. Having those skills will help our first graders learn how to listen instead of blurt and show kindness to others. First graders will learn the power that kindness can have by the end of the month.
Second Grade: Help Yourself Feel Better and Different Feelings
Second Graders will learn the negative side effects of keeping a bad attitude and ways to help ourselves feel better. They will then move on to having empathy for others by learning about how we can all have different feelings about the same thing.
Third Grade: Coping Skills Continued, Self-Esteem, Self-Control, Kindness and Friendship, and Building a Friendship
Before break, third graders played a game of jeopardy as a class to practice role playing and answering hypothetical questions about how to use coping skills to deal with strong feelings. We will be continuing this as we come back from break! Then, we will learn all about what self-esteem and self-control are and how to increase each to feel happier and make smarter choices. We will end the month by learning about how kind acts can lead to new friendships and build on existing ones.
Fourth Grade: Circle of Control and Respect
Fourth Graders will learn how to manage stress in their life by focusing on the things that are in their control. In addition, fourth graders will learn what respect means and what it looks like in different situations.
Fifth Grade: Study Strategies, Beginning to STEP and Conflict Resolution.
Fifth graders will review study strategies that will help them have a strong start back from break with their academics. Sometimes it can be difficult to go back into school mode after a break. The rest of the month, fifth graders will focus on problem solving and resolving conflicts with peers. We will use a method called STEP, which includes - Say the problem, Think of solution, Explore the outcomes, and Pick a solution. This month we will focus on S and T of STEP problem-solving.
Happy 2023!

JANUARY Transportation Department Updates
Happy New Year
We would like to remind everyone that according to our Transportation Handbook, students are not permitted to ride on unassigned buses. Also, we can not permit students to bring in handwritten notes to ride buses with friends. This is a safety and legal issue. We appreciate your help with these matters!
We would like to introduce our new CDL driver Lisa Bowen. Congratulations and welcome to Norwayne!
When inclement weather conditions occur, a decision might be made by the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Superintendent to delay the opening of school, to close school, or to dismiss school early.
Remember, cancellations/delays will be reported to WQMX 94.9, WONE 97.3, WNCO 101.3, WAKR 1590 AM, and Cleveland TV stations: Channels 3, 5, 8, and 19.
Also, Norwayne Local Schools Alert system will send out a text (if you are signed up) and we will post it to our Norwayne Transportation Facebook page.
If you have any questions, you may reach out to Lori Weinman (Transportation Coordinator) via email (lweinman@norwayne.net) or phone(330-435-1141)
Question: True/False - When riding the bus students should be loud and run up and down the aisle.
If you have any questions, you may reach out to Lori Weinman (Transportation Coordinator) via email (lweinman@norwayne.net) or phone(330-435-1141)
Student Handbook Talking Points
- If your child has a fever, they must remain out of school for a minimum of 48 hours. They are able to return after these days as long as the last 24 hours they were fever-free without the aid of fever-reducing medication.
DRESS CODE REMINDER
- Tank tops, muscle shirts, bare midriffs, or sleeveless shirts are NOT permitted. Also, socks are to be worn at ALL times, even with sandals.
- With the weather changing, we go outside for recess as much as possible. We do not have ample extra clothing for students, so please ensure your child dresses for the weather appropriately.
OUTDOOR vs. INDOOR RECESS
- Now that cold weather has arrived, please be reminded that 20 degrees is the benchmark, at which time we look at other weather conditions, such as moisture and wind chill, to decide whether we have indoor or outdoor recess.
2022-2023 NES BREAKFAST and LUNCHES
Nutritious breakfasts and hot lunches are served at our school. For the 2022-2023 School Year breakfast and lunch are no longer free of charge. Milk is available for purchase for those carrying their own lunches. Lunch and milk prices are established annually by the Norwayne Board of Education and can be found noted below. If your child is going to eat a school lunch regularly, we encourage you to send in money for lunches weekly or monthly. Please put your money in an envelope with the student's name and teacher on it or use the online payment system to add money to their account.
Please note that there is now only a $10.00 charge limit in the lunchroom. Norwayne Local Schools have enrolled in https://www.payforit.net/. This service provides parents with a secure, fast, and convenient way to view and manage student lunch activities. Parents can sign up for low-balance notifications, can view students' balances, and deposit money into their children's meal accounts. Note there is a transaction fee for online student deposits. Parents can also send payments to school with their children. Please make checks payable to Norwayne Elementary School.

DECEMBER STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Ms. Conley
- This is my first year here at Norwayne.
- One thing I love about my job is how there is never a dull moment. Each student is unique, and it’s amazing to get to know them and see how they’re growing throughout the year.
A funny moment that has happened so far is during inclusion time in 4th-grade math. I get to help students play gimtkit. Everyone gets very competitive, and it is always entertaining.
- Always be kind to everyone and give everything your best effort!
Mrs. Gerber
- This is my first year at Norwayne.
- I love my kids and my teaching team.
- There are things that happen at school each day that make me smile! I love to be silly and laugh.
- I really enjoy the quote, "There is no 'right time', just time and what you choose to do with it." Try your best, give yourself grace- you can achieve your dreams!
Ms. Lehman
- 5 months! It's my very first year!
I love spending time with my students! They make me laugh and put a smile on my face every day!
- I have funny moments all the time! Some of my funniest moments are when students know more about a topic than I do! I love getting to learn from my students!
- When it comes to learning, do not be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and take some risks! It's okay to make mistakes, they are sometimes the best learning opportunities!
VOLUNTEER UPDATES @ NES
We wanted to share some new information with everyone in regard to volunteers at NES. The district has recently moved to a new background check system (SecureVolunteer, a BIB product) for any and all volunteers in the building. For those of you who frequently visit the NES website, you may have noticed there is a new tab that can be found labeled "Volunteer". I have also linked the tab directly below. By clicking the link you will find information on the volunteer process which will answer many frequently asked questions. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
We realize this is a new process for everyone which is why we are slowly rolling this out. Our expectation would be full implementation by February 1, 2023. This is yet another way we can continue working together in order to provide a safe environment for our students. Thank you so much for your partnership. We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
Norwayne Local School Volunteering Website
VOLUNTEER PROCESS
The Norwayne School Board believes one of the greatest resources available may be found in the citizens of the community who have special knowledge and talents to contribute to the District. The use of citizens as volunteers within the school program enhances the educational process not only for students but for the community as well. Volunteers may provide additional support in the classroom, promote community-school cooperation in facilitating the learning process and provide for individuals who have expertise in various areas to be used as resource persons. While we are continually grateful for this support, we are also aware of the potential concerns that can arise when volunteers are working directly with students. The District notifies current and prospective volunteers who have or will have unsupervised access to children on a regular basis that a criminal records check may be conducted at any time. Norwayne Local Schools prioritizes safety for our students and has established a new volunteer process that includes a background check.
What is required?
A background check through the district’s online system will be required of all school volunteers.
How long does it take to process a background check?
Volunteers should apply for the check at least one week prior to an event.
What activities require a background check?
While this is not an exhaustive list, here are some examples that do or do not require a background check:
Background Check Required
Chaperoning a field trip
Providing learning support for a classroom
PTO volunteer work
Volunteering for a classroom celebration at school
Assisting in school during the instructional day
How much does a background check cost?
At this time, Norwayne Local Schools will be covering the cost of the required background checks for volunteers.
How long is a background check effective?
Background checks are good for three years. You will receive an email 30 days prior to expiration informing you that a new background check is needed.
***Norwayne Local Schools utilizes SecureVolunteer, a BIB (Background Investigation Bureau) product, for our background checks. Click the bar below to be taken to the SecureVolunteer website.
