Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
PBIS stands for “Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.” In schools, this framework involves directly teaching students expected behaviors in the building. Expected behaviors are worded in a positive way, focusing on how students should behave, rather than what they shouldn’t do. For example, one expectation may be “Use walking feet in the hallway” rather than “Don’t run in the hallway.” These expectations are the same throughout the school building for all students and staff so that there is consistency throughout. PBIS schools also praise and recognize students for the positive behaviors they show at school so that these positive behaviors are more likely to happen in the future. At English Landing, we call these SOAR slips! In addition, PBIS involves using a range of supportive services (called interventions) to encourage appropriate behaviors and prevent or address problem behaviors. These interventions are based on data and are evidence based, meaning they have been shown to work in school settings. If you would like more information, please visit the National Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports website or the Missouri PBIS website.
Each semester at English Landing, students will be taught the school-wide matrix expectations. As a way to show that classes know the expected behaviors, students will go on a “SOARing to Success” mission by placing a baby eagle in nests around the building to show they have learned and practiced the school-wide matrix expectations for that particular area, such as the restroom or cafeteria. Our expectations for how to be Safe, Own My Actions (be responsible), Attitude Matters (always be kind) and Respectful are found on our school-wide matrix.

PTA Fundraiser Update
We have met our $6,000 goal and have decided to set a new goal of $10,000! We can do this! Dr. Means will be playing beanboozled on Monday, October 19th since we met our first goal. If we meet the $10,000 goal, Mr. McGinley will ride a tiny bike around the school in a silly costume. The beanboozle event and Mr. McGinley’s bike ride will be recorded and played during morning announcements. Thank you for all of your support!
