Message from Mrs. Penrod
What an amazing first week and a half of school! While I miss giving high fives and greeting your kids at the doors to the school, I love joining their Zoom Morning Meetings and being a part of their joyful morning routines. Seeing their faces and hearing all of the wonderful stories from teachers (including all of the fun ways that your students have been sharing their learning with our PE team) reminds me of the power of our Salem Woods community as well as all the learning we are doing together!
Thank you for your continued support and grace as we walk this new road together. We know that there have been glitches or broken links, and, even with these challenges, we are encouraged by our kids’ perseverance in developing these new routines. Our awesome teachers continue to learn with our students and work so hard each day to create great learning experiences for your kids. Your partnership and help at home with getting on technology and having supplies on hand has been invaluable.
I am excited for all we will learn and accomplish this year! Please feel free to reach out. We are in this together.
Warmly,
Stephanie
i - Ready
Over the next few weeks, students in grades 1-5 will be taking some assessments to help us identify your students academic strengths and areas of need. These assessments will be an important part of providing support to students this fall. As we start this process, we want you to know about i-Ready, the online tool that our district uses to understand your students academic strengths and possible areas of needed support.
We will need your support during this process to ensure that students' results are accurate and show what they know and are able to do. Students will take their i-Ready diagnostic at home while a staff member actively monitors their progress.
Here are the most important things you can do to support your student on the i-Ready diagnostic:
Before the diagnostic:
Make sure your students know how to access i-Ready through Clever. Click here to see instructions.
Watch this video, “Family Guidance video for the Diagnostic at Home”: English | Spanish
Read through the family checklist and supporting phrases: English | Spanish | Additional languages
During the diagnostic:
Provide a place for students to take the diagnostic away from distractions.
Do not help your student. (We want to see how much they know and can do)
Encourage students to do their best, show work on paper, and know that this diagnostic will help teachers know how to support them.
Remind your child that they are NOT expected to know all the answers! In fact, it is estimated that they will only answer correctly approximately 50% of the time or less. Some of the questions are meant to be really hard.
In this linked document, you will find more information about i-Ready and how you can support your student at home. We will also be adding supporting materials on the Monroe School District website's Distance Learning Support page at: https://www.monroe.wednet.edu/covid-19/support-for-families
Thank you for your support during this process. If you have any questions, please reach out.
