Chatham Chats
Dear Families,
This week, we will have many things happening. We will begin our week with K, 1, and 2 Field Day and class parties on Monday. 3rd and 4th grade will be on Wednesday, and we will finish up our week with 5th grade on Friday. We are going to have many people in our building. Please help us maintain the safety of our children by being patient with the front office and following our procedures. (Detailed schedule follows in the newsletter.)
Any parents in the building who want to check out children will need to be at the front desk by 2pm. We need to have all children checked out by 2:15 so that we can ensure a safe and efficient dismissal. If you are not checking children out, we simply ask that your vehicles not block the bus lane. Note that if you park in the side lot, it will fill up quickly for car riders. Remember if you are joining your child for lunch at any point in the cafeteria, priority seating is for the children.
We will have our annual Lunch on the Lawn the last day of school during your child's lunch. Please join us as we celebrate our year. We do ask that you not bring outside food such as McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, etc. We will have a DJ, compliments of our amazing PTA.
Please see the updated GCPS promotion criteria included in the newsletter.
It's great to be a Harbins Tiger!

Revised Promotion Criteria in Grades 3-5
On May 5, 2016, the State Board of Education granted a waiver of promotion, placement, and retention requirements tied to the 2016 administration of the Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) tests. As a result, Gwinnett County Public Schools will use grades to determine promotion and retention for students at the elementary and middle school levels. Once final grades are determined, local schools will communicate with parents of students recommended for summer school. Below you will find the criteria the school system will use for promotion and to determine which students are eligible for summer school.
3rd Grade
Students should have a yearlong average of 70 or better in Reading and possess the Academic Knowledge and Skills [AKS] necessary to be successful at the next grade level in Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
Any student with a yearlong average below a 70 in Reading should be invited to attend Summer School. At the end of Summer School, the school will conduct a local school review to determine promotion based on a preponderance of evidence.
4th Grade
Students should have a yearlong average of 70 or better in Reading and Mathematics and possess the Academic Knowledge and Skills [AKS] necessary to be successful at the next grade level in Science and Social Studies.
Any student with a yearlong average below a 70 in Reading and/or Mathematics should be invited to attend Summer School. Any student with a yearlong average below a 70 in Science and Social Studies should be provided Summer Online Interventions. At the end of Summer School, the school will conduct a local school review to determine promotion based on a preponderance of evidence.
5th Grade
Students should have a yearlong average of 70 or better in Reading and Mathematics and possess the Academic Knowledge and Skills [AKS] necessary to be successful at the next grade level in Science and Social Studies.
Any student with a yearlong average below a 70 in Reading and/or Mathematics should be invited to attend Summer School. At the end of Summer School, the school will conduct a local school review to determine promotion based on a preponderance of evidence.
*For promotion of an English Learner (EL) student, schools will consider the student's progress on his/her English Learner Proficiency Plan and the student's growth in academic language proficiency on ACCESS.
**Promotion decisions regarding the placement of special education students will be guided by their Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
May 25 is the last day of the school year. Once your child’s final grades are determined you will be contacted by your child’s school if your child is recommended for Summer School.
Yearbooks
Friday, May 6th, was the last day to pre-order a yearbook. Books will be delivered to teachers on Thursday, May 12th. The remainder of the books will be sold on a first come basis on Tuesday, 5/17, starting at 7:45 a.m. in the Media Center

Just a few reminders regarding school procedures
Lunchroom: We are so happy you want to come eat with your children. Please help us with the following:
1. Remember students, not adults, have priority for seating. We have to make sure all students have a seat.
2. Depending on availability of seats, students may invite one friend to the visitor table.
3. Refrain from taking pictures of students.
Car Riders: Please help us maintain safety for your children.
1. Remember that you must remain in your car at dismissal. Students cannot be released to you directly from the gym.
2. Your car rider tag must be displayed the entire time you are in the line.
Clinic Corner
Parents please remember to update your phone number with the front office. Sometimes parents change their cell phone numbers and forget to inform the school. Often we run into difficulty trying to reach a parent or guardian when we have the wrong numbers for family members. You may send in a note or stop by the front office to change any information. You may also update your emergency list by stopping by or sending a note with your child. Please remember we only let children go home with a person on your emergency list. If you have an emergency and cannot pick up your child, having a correct and updated emergency contact list is vital. Thank you!
