Cline's Corner
A big thank you for taking care this morning and offering extra help unloading students from the buses and cars. I really appreciate how everyone pulls together to support each other and our students.
Vocabulary Instruction
I wanted to give a quick reminder of Marzano's Six Step Vocabulary process. Vocabulary has a direct relationship to comprehension and supports not only learning to read, but also reading to learn. Direct vocabulary instruction supports learning in all content so it should be embedded in all parts of your day. The following six steps supports Marzano's strategy.
1) Provide a description, explanation, or example of term
2) Ask students to restate the description, explanation, or example in their own words.
3) Ask students to construct a picture, symbol, or graphic representing the word.
4) Engage students periodically in activities that help them add to their knowledge of the terms in their notebooks.
5) Periodically ask students to discuss the terms with one another.
6) Involve students periodically in games that allow them to play with terms.
I like this strategy because it engages the student and it extends their vocabulary learning over a few days to give students time with new words.
Research shows that students of poverty have a 30 million word gap by age 3 from an average child from a professional family. Vocabulary instruction can increase IQ and increase student achievement. I know vocabulary instruction is happening in classrooms. We need to continue to be diligent in teaching and expecting our students to increase their vocabulary. We are also seeing vocabulary as a need in our building when looking at our most current MAP scores.

Have a great week.
BBY Is Back
Please contact her at cruble105@gmail.com with any questions,or content changes that need to be made to the topics she is teaching next week. It would be helpful to Charlene, if you would send her your math lesson plans for next week if she is modeling in your classroom to ensure that the support she is providing enhances what students are currently learning.
Online Resources to Use In Blended Classrooms
Learnzillion has video lessons and curriculum for both ELA and math.
Khan Academy has math lesson videos that may support blended learning.
Slideshare has several Lucy Calkin's units posted in slides that teachers can use as an instructional tool to support both reading and writing. Tracy Gayle shared this valuable resource with me. You may want to ask her more about it.
