Week Ahead @Southview
Week of November 4th-November 8th, 2019
Highlighting Kindness EVEN MORE this week at Southview
MONDAY:
THEME: Remembrance Red (wear red to show kindness and respect for Canadian soldiers)
ACTIVITY: We will begin our week with door decorating on Monday.
TUESDAY:
THEME: Dream of Kindness (Pajama Day)
ACTIVITY: As a class, we will make a kindness pledge. Each class pledge will be collected and made into the “I” on our KIND wall in the downstairs lobby.
WEDNESDAY:
THEME: Peace, Love, Kindness (Dress like a Hippie)
ACTIVITY: The Kindness Game. Educators will watch for acts of kindness completed by students that are mentioned on the Kindness Game sheet. Once a student completes that act of kindness, they will put their name in the empty slot that corresponds with the act of kindness they completed.
THURSDAY:
THEME: Tied Together By Kindness (Wear a tie)
ACTIVITY: The grade 6s will come around to K-5 classes to read stories about kindness.
FRIDAY:
THEME: Team Kindness (Wear your favourite team jersey)
ACTIVITY: To end our week, each class will be given a sheet with several acts of kindness on it. Students take an act of kindness from the page and pass it on to someone else. The idea is to spread kindness throughout our school.
We look forward to a week of fun and kindness. Kindess is expected each day at Southview, but sometimes we need an extra reminder of just how lucky we are to live, learn and love in this amazing school community.
Remembrance Day 2019
Families are welcome to join us in the gym at 10:30am. If there are any military family members who would like to participate in this year's Remembrance Day Ceremony, please contact us at the office. Between 11:05 and 11:20 am, on Monday, five local pilots from the Kingston flying club will be flying in formation over napanee and Southview p. S. The pilots will be flying in formation as a tribute to all the men and women that have, and are currently serving as military personnel in Canada.
We were thankful to welcome Russell Thompson, a 100 year old veteran, who spoke with our Intermediate students on November 7th.
Indigenous Education Month
Kwey kwey, She:kon, Taanshi, Greetings, (pronounced Kway, kway, Say go, Tawn shee)
The Limestone Distict School Board area is home to over 7000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. It is the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe (pronounced Ah nish nah bay) and the Haudenosaunee (pronounced Ho den oh show nay). It is also home to Métis, Inuit and First Nations peoples from across Canada. We believe that all students should have an understanding of the distinct cultures, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Métis and Inuit and we highlight this throughout the month of November during Indigenous Education Month, as well as embedding this throughout our year. Throughout this month we will be sharing announcements and using a variety of resources in classrooms that will teach students about the Indigenous people of this area. We are collaborating with local Knowledge Keepers to help guide our learning around the Haudenosaunee land on which Southview Public School is built on. As we move forward in our Call to Action, we hope to embrace a whole school approach to "Positive Mind, Peace, and Inner Peace" as we learn more about the land on which we live, work, and play.
Important Reminder for Grade 7 Students!
The KFL&A Public Health Immunization Team will be visiting our school on Thursday November 14, 2019 for the fall Grade 7 immunization clinic. Grade 8 students who provided consent for immunizations but missed them in Grade 7 will also be offered catch-up immunizations at this clinic if there is enough time during the clinic. To help ensure a positive experience, please remind your child to eat breakfast and to wear short sleeves on clinic day.
*NEW* Students and their parents/guardians are encouraged to watch both the Ontario’s Grade 7 School Immunizations Video & the Grade 7 School Clinics Video to learn more about the immunizations being offered and what to expect on clinic day at www.kflaph.ca/Grade7Immunizations.
Calling All JK/SK Parents!
The LDSB Speech and Language team is partnering with Early Expressions and the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic School Board to offer a parent/educator night in the Spring (location, date/time of workshop to be determined). Kindergarten teachers, ECEs, and parents of students in Kindergarten will be invited to attend. The workshop will focus on oral language – how to support language development at home and in the Kindergarten classroom.
We have created a survey so we can gain a better sense of what topics families/educators are interested in learning more about.
**Please forward the link below to your Kindergarten and ECE teaching teams. If possible, please also share this survey with JK/SK parents (via classroom website/social media pages, newsletters, etc).**
