[B-C-S news] School Delays/Closures
It’s that time of year when we should expect hazardous winter weather conditions so I am sending this out as a reminder.
I want you to know that the decision to delay or close school is one of my most important responsibilities. Each situation is judged on a case by case basis with the safety of students being the most important consideration. When we have news of impending hazardous weather ranging from fog to snow, we spend a great deal of time monitoring forecasts, driving roads to check conditions, and talking with local officials.
As a general rule, the decision to call a two hour delay of school is made and communicated by 6:00 AM. If we are on a two hour delay, the decision to close school is made and communicated by 8:00 AM. The primary communication is through the Honeywell Instant Alert System. It is critical that you keep your phone number updated. If you need to update your phone number, please notify the Board Office at (419) 898-6210. The decision to close or delay school is also communicated to local TV and radio stations.
All morning practices and activities are cancelled when there is a two hour delay.
If you have any questions please let me know.

FirstEnergy Solutions Press Release
In a news release regarding an a restructuring agreement relative to FES moving out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is attached, here is a key statement:
"The Company will continue operating its nuclear and fossil generation until their previously announced deactivation dates, with a possibility of running the units for an extended period if the Company obtains sufficient legislative support and meaningful market reforms. The Company continues to have constructive dialogue with important stakeholders at the state and federal levels for necessary financial support for its baseload assets that are a critical source of reliable and clean power in Ohio and Pennsylvania."
This confirms what we have been told for months: that Davis-Besse will de-activate by May 2020 if there is no legislative action to make the plant financially viable. FES has not really changed their position on this.
We continue to work with the Ohio Clean Energy Jobs Alliance and others to lobby state and federal officials about the importance of keeping the plant open. The clock is ticking for legislators to agree on a solution and the next few months will be critical. The de-activation of Davis-Besse would have a catastrophic economic impact on Benton-Carroll-Salem School District, Ottawa County, and the entire region.
I will certainly keep you posted with any developments on this front.
Thanks,
Guy

R.C. Waters Highlights Top Class Dojo Winners for the month of December!
R.C. Waters Elementary participates in a school wide initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools by allowing a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn. R.C. Waters has adopted a unified set of expectations for behavior in our school. The unified classroom expectations, found in every classroom and non-classroom settings in the school, are as follows: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready.
Student behavior is documented using a tool called ClassDojo. ClassDojo is a free behavior tracking system that reinforces positive behaviors and quickly engages students in becoming accountable for their own choices. One of the main benefits is the easy opportunity to communicate with parents. On a scheduled rotation, students are able to “shop” from the Dojo reward cart using the points they have earned for meeting the behavior expectations.
R.C. Waters would like to highlight the top Class Dojo winners for the month of December.
