Message from Principal Polomsky
Elmwood Parents & Community~
Thank you for attending our Parent/Teacher conferences this week. I know there were many wonderful celebrations you and the teachers were able to discuss at this point in the year and we look forward to continuing to build upon our relationships with each of you.
Next week is a full week of school! It’s been a while since we have enjoyed an entire week of learning together and we are looking forward to it.

VISION AND HEARING
This year, our Vision and Hearing Screening is scheduled for October 22, 2018. Students are routinely screened for vision in the Early Childhood Program, 2 and 8 grade, and for hearing in Early Childhood, K, 1, 2, 3. Students in special education are screened for vision and hearing annually. Students can also be screened by teacher or parent request if a child exhibits symptoms. This is only a screening and does NOT take the place of an examination by a doctor. A more comprehensive vision or hearing exam can be obtained through an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Donate Small Toys to Elmwood
Every Friday we invite our selected winning S.O.A.R. students to pick a treat from our treasure box in the lunchroom. As you can imagine, this is the highlight of the week for many kids as they reach into the box and get to take home a tangible item (i.e. coloring book, chalk, squishy ball, fun pencils/pens etc.). Our Home & School generously donates to our treasure box each year; however the funds go quickly. If you have any non-edible treasures (i.e. toys from birthday party treat bags, McDonald's toys etc.) at home that you're looking to get rid of, we will gladly take any new/gently used small items from you. *Please send items in a bag labeled 'SOAR prizes for the office' and we will toss them in our treasure box. Remember... "One's trash is another one's treasure!" :) Thanks in advance for your donation!
Winter Wear & Halloween Drive
We will be collecting winter apparel and Halloween costumes for our students within the Elmwood community. This year, we will be posting our requests through a Signup Genius link (coming soon). We will be collecting snow pants, coats, hats, mittens, boots, scarves & Halloween costumes. If you have any of these items laying around your home, please set them aside as we will accept all new or gently used items during the week of Parent/Teacher conferences: October 4th & 5th. Thanks in advance for opening your hearts to others in need! *If your child is in need of any of these items mentioned, please call our office #630-420-6341 and we will connect you with our social workers.

9th Annual Dave Cleveland Fun Run is Thursday, October 11th
Elmwood's biggest, school-wide event is near. The Fun Run takes place during school. Each class has a 30 minute session where they will run around our track to fun music, getting bananas and water, and our beloved Eagle may even show up. Weather-permitting, if we are able to keep it outdoors, parents are welcome to cheer on their child and help pass out water and bananas to our amazing runners. This is also one of our biggest fundraisers of the year that can help determine what we can afford for our teachers, staff and students for the upcoming year. So, bring in those pledges by October 11th and come out for some fun! Questions or if you are interested in volunteering on the day, please email elmwoodfunrun@gmail.com
Halloween at Elmwood
Halloween will be celebrated at Elmwood on Wednesday, October 31st. Our annual parade will begin at 1:15 PM and all parents are invited to attend. Weather permitting, students will exit out Door 17 while taking two laps around the track. If weather is poor the parade will be indoors and viewing will take place in the multipurpose room and Gym.
Halloween Costumes
- K – 5th graders should bring their costumes to school in a bag and change at lunchtime.
- Children are allowed to wear appropriate Halloween masks. However, masks should be appropriate for all elementary school children. Please avoid sending students with masks that have “fake” blood or masks that will impair their vision.
- No weapon replicas are permitted at school at any time.
- Children may participate in the parade in regular school dress.
Halloween Pictures
All pictures of ‘other’ children should be sent to the yearbook committee and shouldn’t be shared via Facebook or other forms of social media. elmwoodeagles@gmail.com
Dismissal on Halloween
Parents, please REFRAIN from pulling your kids early (2:25 PM) from the Halloween party. Although 5-minutes does not sound like a big deal…. It indeed creates confusion for students and staff as room parents walk around to pull their children and/or even their neighbor children from multiple classrooms prior to dismissal. PLEASE wait until the final 2:30 PM bell to take children home. IF you absolutely have to take your own child home early, parents will need to sign children out at the front office and this is highly discouraged.
Halloween Parade Participation
Everyone is welcome to participate in the parade. If you wish your child to not participate, they can go to the Learning Center during this time. Please notify their teacher/s by email of their desired plan. Activities will be available for their enjoyment.
Rake ‘n Run
Do you or any of your neighbors need a helping hand due to a new baby, advanced age or health problems?
The Elmwood Elementary School Family Partnership Committee (SFCP) is hosting a Rake ‘n Run event on Saturday, November 10, 2018. If you or any of your neighbors need their front yard as part of a free community service project, please call the Elmwood School office at 630-420-6341 or email ElmwoodSFCP@gmail.com. Please contact us by Friday, October 25th, so that we may allow enough time to assemble volunteers. We will then be at your house between 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th, weather permitting, to rake your lawn!
We are also looking for volunteers to rake on Saturday, November 10. If you are available and and willing to lend a helping hand, please email us at ElmwoodSFCP@gmail.com. This is a great event to get the whole family involved and help teach kids about being a caring community! We will have coffee, juice and bagels/donuts afterward in the Elmwood garden to reward you for your hard work!
Can’t make the event but still want to help out? We’d love for some baked goods to be donated for the hard-working volunteers. Please email us as well if you would be willing to donate an item.
If you have any questions please email.

Lego Engineering Club – After School STEM Enrichment Club (K through 5th grade)
Bricks 4 Kidz offers hands-on, interactive and engaging curriculum that introduces students to STEM concepts and mechanics using LEGO® bricks, gears, axles and motors. The program provides students the opportunity to build motorized models using proprietary model plans and kits. Bricks 4 Kidz will be offering Fall and Spring sessions on Fridays 2:30 – 3:30 pm (Fall Session starting October 26th). Each session is a brand new theme and provides the students an opportunity to progress to challenging models at their own pace during the school year. The attached Bricks 4 Kidz flyer provides further details on the sessions. Limited availability, register soon! Register online at www.bricks4kidz.com/naperville
ColorCyle
Elmwood is going to participate in a very special program with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy! All around Elmwood students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located around the school for your child to deposit the markers. Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Remember, don’t throw out that used marker—ColorCycle it!
