MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Monthly Principal Read Aloud - What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick
Parents, Guardians, & Family of 3rd , 4th, & 5th grade students:
Your child will take SOL tests this month. This can be an incredibly stressful time for them because of the pressures the state has placed on a singular exam. Please know that you have raised children that have bright futures in front of them. You’ve raised children who help their friend up on the playground, who live out Bulldog Pride even when no one is looking, who work tirelessly for hours for their teachers, who stand up against bullies, who spread kindness, who create the most beautiful works of art, and so much more. You have trusted us every day with your precious child, and we don’t take a single day with them for granted. Please hug them tightly every night. Let them know how proud of them you are. Remind them that no test will ever define them. Remind them that this is just an opportunity to show what they know, and that the world will keep spinning. And that we will never take this one test and use it judge their worth.
We are a school family of learning, growth, and relationships. We continually focus on growing the whole child. And though the state has deemed these tests as a determining factor of our success, and though we will treat them seriously, please know that we understand that every child has their own version of success and we will work tirelessly to bring out the best in every one of our children we serve, and sometimes that can’t be measured with a standardized test.
I encourage you to join us as we passionately cheer our students on to the end of this school year!
Fondly,
Mrs. Jones, Lead Learner

STEAM Updates
Food Chain Project:
4th grade has wrapped up their 3Doodler Food Chain Project. 3Doodler pens allow students to draw in 3D. They work similar to a regular pen, but instead of ink, it uses plastic filament.
Challenge: As a group create a food chain of your choice. Research various environments, such as ocean, rainforest, desert, etc. Each student must pick 1 animal to draw/3D print to complete your food chain. Your group must be able to identify the flow of energy in the final food chain.
After students drew their organism with the 3Doodler pen they created pencil toppers by gluing a pipecleaner to the back of the organism. Students used their pencil toppers to record on flipgrid and describe their food chain. You can check out their videos here: https://flipgrid.com/7qsbil
STEAM in Sports PBL:
As an extension to the STEAM in Sports Day on Friday, April 27th, 5th grade students who did not attend the Tomahawk Middle School field trip, had the opportunity to complete a STEAM in Sports PBL.
Challenge: We've learned how Newton's Laws of Motion can be seen in everyday sporting events. Pick 1 sport that you are passionate about and demonstrate these laws in action. As a group, use recycled materials to build equipment needed for your sport, then explain how Newton's Laws are shown in action by using Flipgrid. Your video should include at least 3 different ways how science is incorporated in your sport.
You can check out their videos here: https://flipgrid.com/dc2829
Earth Day ChatterPix:
For part of Earth Day, kindergarten and first grade students have been learning about the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) that protect our Earth.
Challenge: Earth Day is coming up and it is a great time to remind our friends how we can take care of our Earth! Draw a picture that reminds you of one of our 3 R's. Using ChatterPix, make your picture come to life to tell us about why it's important to keep our Earth clean for plants and animals.
It was wonderful to see our youngest learners express their voice and learning in a different way. You can see their videos here: https://flipgrid.com/7qsbil
