Dolphin Parent Connection

October 2021 Volume 7, Issue 3

We want to thank each of you for doing your part to keep students healthy and safe during these first few weeks of school. Your diligence in reviewing and following the daily screening checklist (below), following up with your child's doctor, and keeping the school informed has helped us avoid a large amount of required quarantines. We ask you to please continue these practices. Our staff will continue to be diligent in following and monitoring safety mitigations throughout the day. With each of us doing our part, we can continue to keep as many students in school as possible.

The Red Mill Boosterthon Fun Run Is Coming Up This Month!

Our Red Mill Boosterthon Fun Run will kick off in just 3 weeks on 10/21. This is our joint school and PTA fundraiser for the year. Our goal is to raise $25,000 for Instructional Technology, Furniture, Instructional Materials and Student Programs and to strengthen our school community. We’ve asked our friends at Booster to power our fundraiser to make it more profitable, fun, and easy for everyone! This year's theme is Sports City: World Wide. Students will travel the world and meet 5 REAL kid-athletes who play with character. Students will be learning about how to play with CURIOSITY, CONFIDENCE, HUMILITY, PRACTICE, & ENDURANCE through mini-documentaries that highlight these REAL kid-athletes.

Here’s what all students can get excited about:

• Fun, engaging character development lessons

• A high-energy event to give our school a much needed boost of fun!

If your family feels it’s not in the position to financially support the school, that’s ok. Families can actually support our school by also SHARING about our fundraiser with friends and family online. Sharing IS supporting. We want all students to be a part of this event so all students will receive the Red Mill Fun Run t-shirt, and all students will participate in the Fun Run on October 29th.

  • Registration Opens - 10/07 Register on MYBOOSTER.COM
  • Donating Starts - 10/14
  • Fundraiser Kick Off - 10/21

1st Grade Gifted Screening

An Assessment Specialist for gifted education will be working with all 1st grade students at Red Mill Elementary School on Thursday, October 28, 2021. A good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast are the best preparation. Your cooperation in having your child present on this date is appreciated.

You can access your child’s ParentVUE account to view your child’s gifted screening scores. Your child’s gifted screening score will be available on ParentVUE by Thursday, January 6, 2022. Parents may access it at that time.

The parent/guardian of grade one students scoring 90% or above must submit an online application for their child to be further assessed and considered for gifted services. Parents/guardians may submit an online application for students to be further assessed who do not score 90th percentile but wish to be considered for gifted services.

The gifted online application is located at Additional gifted testing information can be found at RMES Gifted Website. If you have any questions, please contact your school’s Gifted Resource Teacher, Cynthia Housianitis-Johnston, at

Counselor Corner

During the month of October, we will gain skills in the area of self-regulation by learning and reviewing the Zones of Regulation. Students will learn how to recognize their emotions and state of alertness, and they will begin learning how to use tools or strategies to stay calm, focused, and ready to learn.

The Zones of Regulation is a concept developed by Leah Kuypers, MA Ed., OTR/L. Although the curriculum was designed for students who struggle with self-regulation, all students benefit by gaining insight into their own states and becoming more aware of the tools they can use to regulate.

At Home

"Throwing tantrums and acting out are natural but ineffective ways to handle high-stimulation situations. We can help our children by teaching them how to calm down effectively or to avoid impulsive reactions. Think about how we teach kids to ride a bike: It takes practice, patience, and more practice!"

See the below linked article for some ways to support self-regulation skills on a daily basis.

Tracking Your Student's Bus

Edulog Parent Portal lets parents see the time and location planned for school bus arrival at their child’s bus stop. The app also lets them view the location of the school bus to gauge arrival times each day and sends a push notification to their smartphone when the bus enters a user-defined geographic area around the stop. Parents only receive access by registering with data unique to their child. It’s all information to help parents feel secure about their child’s trip on the school bus!

ParentVue Accounts

ParentVue is the application that allows parents to access information regarding their child's attendance, course history, class schedule, grades, test history, and other important documents such as report cards. If you have not signed up for an account, go to

Parent Communication

The school division will continue to utilize the AlertNow messaging system to disseminate information at the division level. The specific email addresses and phone numbers that receive these messages from the AlertNow system are based on information we currently have in our Student Information System.

Additionally, Red Mill may occasionally send text messages via the AlertNow Messaging system with important reminders and transportation changes. In order to receive text messages, you have to Opt In. See below for directions on how to Opt In or Opt Out of text messages.

How do I know if I have Opted-in?
You can check if you are opted-in by texting “Y” or "YES" to 67587.

How do I opt-out?

You may opt-out at any time by texting “STOP” to 67587.

What if I opted-out but later decide I would like to opt-in again?
As long as your child’s school has your text-enabled phone number on record, you may request to begin receiving text messages by texting “Y” or "YES" to 67587. If the school does not have your text-enabled number on record, you will need to contact the school.
