The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Baby Animals
Essential Question: How are offspring like their parents?
Next week our class will be focusing on the ways that animal babies are like their parents. Your child will compare how babies and parents are the same and how they are different. This helps us address the following Indiana Academic Science Standard:
- "Determine patterns and behavior (adaptations) of parents and offspring which help offspring to survive."

Be Drug and Bully-Free
Don't forget, we are taking a month-long approach to Red Ribbon Week, Send A Message. Stay Drug Free.TM, this year. In recognition of Bully Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week, we are encouraging our faculty and students to participate in various activities/dress-up days scheduled throughout the month of October. We will be focusing on making healthy choices and pledging to live drug and bully-free lives. Coming up, the following events and dress-up days are being planned:
Monday, October 7
· Wear blue – “Walk, Run, & Roll Against Bullying”
Science: Magnificent Mammals
This week students have been serving as scientists as sleuths. They have been using inquiry learning with trays containing mammal clues of an animal located in our region. For instance, a tray might contain a track, scat replica (yes, I said replica), actual skull, habitat photo, and food photo. One clue at time, students document their observations, and ask questions to determine the animal's identity. Trust us, this has been BIG fun! Be sure to check out the sleuths below.
Math: A Smorgasbord of Strategies
They're getting it! They're really, really getting it! I have been so very pleased with the students' grasping of subtraction with regrouping (borrowing). I've presented many strategies for understanding this sometimes difficult concept, and the students are using the methods that best suit them. The result has been incredible. Never have I had a group of students grasp double-digit subtraction so quickly! I'm proud of these young mathematicians for mastering the following Indiana Math Academic Standard:
- "Add and subtract within 1000, using models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; describe the strategy and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones, and that sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds"
My Energy Kits
Next week students will be treated to an informative presentation about the consumption and conservation of energy. In advance of this high-energy performance sponsored by Duke Energy, they are offering a FREE energy kit to our families. As an added bonus, Duke will award our school money for your participation. Remember, it is FREE and our school has the potential to earn up to $2,500. Even better, Duke will select a lucky family to receive $1,000!!!!!! Click here to request your FREE kit (or fill out the hard copy information that was sent home in today's folder). You do not have to be a Duke Energy customer to participate.
School Smiles
School Smiles will be providing an on-site dental care service for our students on Friday, November 1, 2019. If you want your child to participate in this program, please complete the form found in your child’s Friday folder and return by Friday, October 11th. You may also same time by registering by phone at 1-855-497-6453, or online by clicking here. Feel free to call the school nurse at 458-5521 extension #1403 if you have questions.
Next Week's Share Topic
When I Was A Baby: Bring in pictures of you as a baby. Where were you born? What was your birth weight? What stories have your grandparents or parents told about you as a baby?
Showing a level of preparedness for the weekly share topics is a simple way to boost the language arts grade.
