News and Updates

First Issue under the A&M-Commerce team coming soon. Anticipated Date: Oct. 15-25, 2022. Issues will be published in the Fall and Spring (around conference time).

The Jack Cassidy Memorial Scholarship was established in the year of 2021 to honor the life works of Dr. Jack Cassidy, TALE’s founder and first President (2011-2012). Dr. Cassidy’s fingerprint can be found everywhere in the literacy field. He was a Professor Emeritus at Millersville University in Pennsylvania and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He was known for his annual publication, “What's Hot, What’s Not in Literacy”, which he oversaw for 25 years. He was also a former President of the International Reading Association and the College Reading Association, as well as a member of the Reading Hall of Fame. In 2013, TALE established an award in his honor, the Jack Cassidy Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes educators, like him, who demonstrate exemplary service in the field of literacy.
The Jack Cassidy Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Texas Association for Literacy Education, is awarded annually to two graduate students earning a Masters or Doctoral degree in a literacy related field. The scholarship assists with tuition, textbooks, or costs associated with completing a thesis or dissertation.

How to Apply

Along with the completed application, attach the following documents:

  • A current Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume
  • A letter of interest that includes a brief description of the planned area of study, career goals, and how the scholarship will be used if awarded
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the university being attended. In addition to serving as a recommendation, the letter should confirm enrollment in a graduate program within a literacy related field and whether the applicant’s current academic standing includes a GPA of 3.0 or higher

The completed application form, CV/resume, and letter of interest must be emailed to TALE@texasreaders.org with the phrase Jack Cassidy Memorial Scholarship in the subject line of your email. Letters of recommendation must be sent directly from the faculty member on university letterhead. Please inform the faculty member to email the letter to TALE@texasreaders.org with the phrase Jack Cassidy Memorial Scholarship in the subject line

What we are doing...

  • On 9/8 Sara participated in a call with Raise Your Hand Texas and a staffer from Sen. Donna Campbells' Office

  • Liza recorded a podcast that should be posted by the weekend

  • We are planning to give a legislator award this year - Liza has nominated Representative James Talarico; please share if you have other legislators you would like to nominate

  • We will be sending out nominations for our Leadership in Literacy Awards by Halloween

  • On October 8th, Sara will be participating in a candidate forum in Boerne with Raise Your Hand Texas - this is being changed since only one candidate got back to us. It will likely now be an Advocacy Bootcamp with RYHT
