The Lion's Share Newsletter
September 2019
From the Desk of Mr. Miller:
Welcome to the 2nd newsletter of the year! We have been moving quickly in building strong connections with our students. Each classroom has built their own social contract. This contract was created by the students. It represents how the students want to be treated by the teacher, how they want to be treated by others, how they will treat their classmates, and how to best resolve conflict. Each social contract is unique and different. Don't be surprised if you stop by to visit and you are asked to sign the social contract yourself!
In other exciting news, our state test results have been released! Each year, every school is given a score on the School Performance Framework (SPF). I like to think of the SPF as Grant's report card from the Colorado Department of Education. This report shows both achievement and growth. It compares our students with how the rest of the state is doing. For the fourth year in a row, we have been given the designation of being a "Performance" school! Grant grew just over 13% from the previous year, giving us one of our highest scores (70.1%) every! Our students worked so hard, as did our staff. I would just like to say congratulations on a job well done! If you would like to see our SPF, or learn more about it, I'd be happy to share. We will be holding our School Accountability Meeting at 5:15 on Tuesday, September 10th in my office. Feel free to stop by!
Please be on the lookout for information regarding after school clubs and activities. Each year, Grant teachers offer up their time to hold various after school clubs and activities, and many of them will be starting soon! In fact, Cross Country will begin next week, as will our newest after school activity, Girls on the Run! Did you know that we pay for an Activity Bus to pick up our bus riding students after the activities end to take them home? This bus ensures that each student wanting to participate in a club or activity can, regardless of where they live in our boundaries.
If you haven't already turned in our handbook signature page, please be sure to do so soon! Each year, we ask you to look over the handbook and take some time to discuss it with your students. On the last page of the handbook, you will see a parent/guardian signature page. Please sign that you have gone over the handbook and return the signature page with your student.
Finally, as our school continues to thrive, we are in the process of adding a new kindergarten teacher to our family! As of right now, we have 31 kindergartners in our 3 classes. I have appealed to the school district for additional help, and they approved our appeal! We are hoping to hire a new teacher in the coming weeks to help reduce our large kindergarten class sizes. This really is great news!
Please be sure to check out the September events listed below. We will be adding new events to this newsletter as we learn of new clubs and activities. So, please keep the link your received the newsletter from as it will update weekly!
I hope you all had a wonderful three day weekend! Here's to a great September!
