February at Woodbrook

Dear Woodbrook Families,

I hope you are all doing well and that Staten Island Chuck (the groundhog) was correct in his prediction for an early spring! If that is the case, we can all look forward to warm sunshine early on!

We cheered on the spellers in January and were excited to celebrate the Woodbrook Spelling Champion, 5th grade student, Srivatsa Vadlamani. Congratulations and best of luck in the next round Srivatsa! Thanks to Mr. Narvaez and all of the Woodbrook teachers for helping to run our annual spelling bee!

January was our first International Expo since before COVID and we had more friends and families join than we have had in a long while! The children performed beautifully and their reports and brochures of regions around the world were filled with interesting information. Thank you to Ms. Tomasella, Mrs. Towers, Mrs. Horvat, Mrs. Buckelew and all of the staff members and JPS NHS volunteers who helped to facilitate the show. We did have a few problems which could have been avoided. While our set up allowed for all parents to see and hear their children, there were some parents standing up in aisles and seats blocking others from enjoying the show and even blocking children from entering. We will be holding our spring concert at Woodrow Wilson Middle School on April 27th which is a larger venue with bleachers and most likely, we will move our International Expo next year to that venue as well. This will allow for better sight and sound. Absolutely no standing or sitting out of a proper seat will be permitted for the safety and viewing of all.

Global Play Day was super fun! Students brought in their non-electronic toys and games and spent time during the day playing, creating, communicating and engaging in fun social activities completely on their own. At home, try to encourage more social engagements with less structure for your children to learn how to create, compromise and collaborate!

We welcome the sweet sentiment our precious children show their friends and classmates each Valentine's Day. This Valentine's Day, we are asking all students to MAKE THEIR OWN VALENTINES! That means that instead of parents having to purchase the little boxes of commercial cards, the children will be as creative as they choose and they can make their own cards. If they are doing this work at home, please spend a few moments with our youngest children reminding them about cutting shapes properly and writing or drawing as nicely as they can. Please do not send in candy or toys or gifts to the children in the classroom, we would rather their feelings are simply "HEARTFELT".

Come cheer on your friends and neighbors at the Woodbrook's Got Talent Show in the gym on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 6:15 p.m. in the Woodbrook gym. ($5 per person entry fee for this PTO fundraiser).

Our annual food drive begins this Wednesday, Feb. 8 and ends Friday Feb. 17. Please send your child in with a can or box of new, fresh, unopened non perishable food for the drive.

Our science/invention fair is now open for registration! Please register HERE. The public presentations at night are OPTIONAL. Classroom presentations are mandatory for anyone who chooses to participate.

A new poster contest has begun to encourage inclusion. Please see the link HERE for that All In Poster Contest information which was emailed to all families. Due May 5, 2023.

A reminder for all parents dropping off for 8 a.m. morning activities.

PARK in the lines of the stop & drop lot and

watch your child walk down the sidewalk to the main entrance.

Do not use it as a stop & drop lot at 8 a.m. and

do not drive around the circle.

Thank you to the PTO Volunteers who took the time to decorate our lobby for Lunar New Year! What a wonderful cheery and bright welcome for our students and families! Wishing everyone a prosperous and healthy new year!

WOODBROOK HANDBOOK 2022-2023

Send Umbrellas & Wear Boots when Rain is Expected

On rainy days students are still expected to walk down the sidewalk into the building. Please do not try to change the procedure and drop children off closest to the building because it is raining. Instead, pull up in the stop & drop lot and ensure your child is wearing rain boots and using a child size umbrella.

What to Do When Your Child is Absent

Please always ensure that you follow the TWO STEP procedure when your child is absent.

1. Call the school to report your child's absence.

2. Send a note with the REASON/doctor's note for your child's absence when your child RETURNS.

No Idling & No U Turns

Please be reminded that there is no idling when you are parked in the stop & drop lot to pick up students at 3:30 p.m. The neighbors have been complaining and have called the police to enforce the law.

In addition, be sure you are not making a U-turn by the stop & drop lot or by the flagpole. It is dangerous and it is not permitted.
