New Albany High School
Important Message - September 21, 2021
Dear Parents and Families,
As partners in your student’s achievement, growth, and well-being, we are writing this evening to make you aware of two trends that we are currently seeing among our students.
1. TikTok Trend (Devious Lick Challenge) - A trend among students nationally is to steal or vandalize school property and then post it to tiktok. This can range in behaviors such as stealing items from a teacher's desk to ripping things off walls or even greater destruction. Many area schools are dealing with this trend and we, too, have unfortunately seen some of this inappropriate behavior in our high school. Specifically, we have noticed soap and paper towel dispensers that are ripped off of the walls, spray bottles filled with disinfecting products being taken from classrooms and intentional damage to our hand sanitizer stations. These types of behaviors violate our student code of conduct and will continue to result in disciplinary action and potential criminal charges for vandalism, destruction, or theft of school property.
2. Vaping - We have seen a substantial increase in vaping over the past two weeks at the high school. We have received reports of vaping in our bathrooms and have found several students in possession of vape pens and other nicotine devices. This trend risks the health and safety of our students. We continue to work to educate our students on the dangers of vaping and have counselors on staff to help provide guidance to students who struggle with substance abuse. We want to do everything we can to be proactive in addressing this trend by providing some information and resources to assist in furthering everyone’s education about the dangers of vaping.
The administration and staff will continue to be visible and monitor our bathrooms, hallways, and other locations as always. While there is a responsibility to address these behaviors as they occur in school, we also want to be proactive and provide information and understanding to our students to help prevent these behaviors. We need your help and ask that you please have a conversation with your child(ren) about these two specific issues trending on social media. We want to do everything we can to help our students choose a responsible “R” (response) and make good choices to stay healthy and safe at school, at home, and in our community. We are committed to the success of our students and invite you to continue to work with us everyday to create a safe school environment where all of our students can thrive and be successful.
Thank you,
Mr. Kraemer
Principal
