I hope everyone had a fun-filled break! This quarter, we are going to be very busy! We will be working on student portfolios for student-led conferences in March, and we have begun the process of working on our PBL that the kids will be presenting towards the end of the year as well. Our topic for this year’s PBL is Idaho Birds of Prey. I will be sending a letter home with more information on this topic and what the kids will be doing. I have also introduced a new learning app to the kids called Prodigy. It is a math game that allows kids to play in a story while answering common-core standard math questions based on their grade. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns with this new math app. Now that we’re all back, we’re going to get back to the grind and continue to persevere in our learning!
4/5 Mrs. Hanes
After learning how to use a grid system to transfer and create a map of Idaho the 4th and 5th grade will be creating salt dough topography maps of Idaho. This week we are transferring our map onto the cardboard support medium, creating a grid, marking the required features and creating our location flags. A note has gone home asking each student to create a batch of salt dough, wrap it in plastic or seal in a zip lock bag, and send back to school. These batches will be consolidated and colored at school and then we will distribute them. Making dough is an authentic use of proportion and fractions as well sequencing practice and reading and following non-fiction writing. Thank you, parents for your help.

Community Groups: Victim Proof
You can't control whether or not you get bullied,
but you can control whether or not you become a victim.
-Tom Thelen
Bruneau Elementary students have started learning about bullying and how to become Victimproof in community groups this month. We are studying the message of Tom Thelen's book VictimProof while emphasizing how we dohave control over how we respond to bullying. Students are applying the idea of leaving bitterness behind and forgiving to let yourself off the hook, empower yourself and remove the power from the bully. We are learning the importance of The Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This rule gives us the power to change the culture in our school.
