## Language Arts

This week we learned that revision is the real work of writing. It means looking at a piece of writing AND making changes to make the writing even better. We worked with excellence and perseverance to revise stories that were important to us. We looked hard to see if we had zoomed in on a small moment, used sensory detail to add meaning to our writing and checked if we had written satisfying endings. We found parts of our writing where we had done this successfully and we found parts we could improve. The published results amazed us and our teachers. We can't wait to begin our author study on Patricia Polacco next week. Our goal is to notice what is special about her writing and how we can use her strategies to improve our own craft.

## Mathematics

This week, we have continued our learning focus on Factors and Multiples. These lessons have proved to be a valuable opportunity for the children to consolidate their understanding of these concepts. We have been able to put this knowledge to work by investigating the Lowest Common Multiple between two given numbers.

The end of unit review is an opportunity for the children to demonstrate the knowledge gained in this unit and also to identify areas for growth. We will be sending this home next week in the Green Mathematics Assessment folder. Please discuss this with your child, sign it and return it to your class teacher by Thursday next week.

Starting next week, we will focus on Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers. We will begin with multiplication of 4-digit numbers by a 1-digit number.

## IPC

In their IPC learning this week, the students have been learning about how the tourism industry uses geographical information to market destinations.

They learned that tourist attractions can be natural or man-made. The destination's natural physical features include (mountains, rivers, beaches, forests etc. attract tourists as do its man-made features (hotels, theme parks, architecture, historical).

They then put all of their knowledge to great use by creating a travel brochure for a destination of their choice.

To enhance their learning, computer software was used that allowed them to choose a preferred layout before inserting relevant pictures and text to highlight the attractions of their destination.

## Language Arts

SPELLING FOCUS

Over the last two weeks, we have been learning the spelling rules/conventions for making nouns plural by adding -e and -es.

This week, we progress onto other plurals, most notably nouns ending in -f or -fe.

The rule for spelling most words ending in -f, change the f to a v and add es

e.g. elf -> elves

For most words ending in -fe, drop the fe and add -ves

e.g. wife -> wives

However, some nouns have unusual plurals and need to be learned by heart!

e.g. ox -> oxen, mouse -> mice, goose -> geese

Words to be learnt: thief, thieves, scarf, scarves, calf, calves, knife, knives, tooth, teeth

Additional challenge words: loaf, loaves, half, halves, geese

Read a 'Just Right' book for 20 minutes or more each evening. Share and discuss with family members what you have read. Practice reading aloud in front of your family members using clear projection, fluency and expression.
