Fall Favorites
The beginning of October always makes me think of cozy fires, warm sweaters and cool nights. I'm not much for winter and snow, but I am looking forward to some autumn days. October is also a great time for schools. Our students are settled into classes and pushing themselves as learners. Every time that I am in classrooms I am impressed with the depth of thinking and work ethic of our students.

Lost and Found
Well, fall has officially begun. Cool mornings and warm afternoons mean lots of coats and sweatshirts end up in lost and found. If your student is missing something, please ask them to check the lost and found in the red box outside of the cafeteria.

Lock Down Drill
As many of you know, schools in Jeffco practice a lockdown drill once per year. We conduct these drills in a routine manner, the same way that we practice fire drills. Our lockdown drill is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, sometime between 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning. During this drill, I will announce to students that we are going to practice what needs to happen in case we ever have to go into lockdown. Students are instructed to go to the designated location in their classroom and get very quiet. Teachers turn off the lights in the classroom and wait for further instruction. At this point, Jeffco security will go room to room and check that procedures were followed. At no point do we ever simulate an active shooter or any other threat. Security officers are great about reassuring students that they are safe.
If you happen to come to Stott during this drill, you may not be able to enter the building immediately. While the drill is happening, we will not be able to open the doors for any guests. Thank you for your support as we work to keep our students as safe as possible.

Three Act Math Tasks
Thanks to a generous donation from the Jefferson Foundation, 8 teachers at Stott were able to attend a recent math training. We're so excited to learn about new ways to engage students in thinking critically about math problems. Teachers are now planning for additional opportunities to use this learning in their classrooms. Pictures below are from a 1st grade classroom. You can see how excited the students were to "do math". Ask your students about Three Act Tasks.

Conferences Coming
Conferences are scheduled for October 16 and 17. Look for a Sign-Up-Genius link from your child's classroom teacher soon. This link will allow you to choose a conference time that will work for your schedule. Conferences are 20 minutes and are intended to provide a brief update on current academic performance as well as next steps for each child.
