Winter Park High School Band Notes
September 2, 2018
FROM MR. BLACKMER
Dear Winter Park Band Families:
I hope that everyone is having a restful Labor Day Weekend!
The "Sound of the Wildcats" had another terrific performance this past Friday night at halftime! Many thanks to Mary Bernard, Candace Griffin, Lee McBurney, Willson McBurney, and all of our parent chaperones and volunteers to assisted!
The Marching Band will have its first away performance this coming Friday, September 7 at Wekiva High School! Please note in the itinerary that the plan is to have the Marching Band in full uniform for this performance. This is completely dependent on us receiving our marching shoe order this week, but I am fairly confident that this will happen. Please review the itinerary for information regarding the full marching band uniform and/or ask a section leader!
A few items for this week...
First, we kicked-off our annual coupon book fundraiser this past Wednesday. This year's book is the City Saver. It is a different book than what we have used in the past, but I believe that people will find it has many more local opportunities included, as well as many online establishments to choose from. Remember that 100% of our profit goes directly back to the student's Band account to use toward Band Fees, our trip to Los Angeles in June, and many other things. The books are selling for $25/each, and the student receives $12.50 from each book purchased. Also, don't forget that books are available for purchase in other regions around the United States! The final day for orders is Wednesday, September 12.
Next, congratulations to Zachary Asarnow! He was elected as the Freshman Representative on the Band Council this past Friday!
Please see the information about water bottles below. This weekend would be the perfect opportunity to take care of this water donation!
Please keep the Mattress Sale Fundraiser on Saturday, September 29 on the "front-burner" in your minds! Get the word out to as many people as you know, in as many ways that possible. Remember that 100% of mattress sale profits come back to our students, and that's in addition to the cash bonuses received for each mattress sold! Unlike most fundraisers that we do, this one is completely dependent on pre-sale day marketing!
Now that the school year is beginning to settle in, it is the perfect time to seek out a private teacher for students. Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and advancement within the Winter Park Band Program, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument. A long list of private teachers can be found HERE on our website. You can also contact any local music store for a list of teachers.
Finally, coming off of a 3-day weekend, it is sometimes easy to forget that our first day back this week is Tuesday! Don't forget about marching rehearsal after school that day!
Thank you!
All the Best!
Mr. Blackmer
CASES OF WATER
We are looking for each family to bring in 2 cases of water in the next week.
GRADE 9: 1 case of large bottles (16.9 oz) and 1 case of small bottles (8 oz).
GRADE 10-12: 2 cases of large bottles (16.9 oz).
Water can be dropped off in the Band Room anytime during the week. Try to use a permanent marker to put the student's name on the cases.
2ND ANNUAL MATTRESS SALE FUNDRAISER
The Winter Park Bands will be hosting their 2nd annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser on Saturday, September 29 in the East Cafeteria! This is a great way for students to earn credit into their Band account, and there is a Facebook event page found at https://www.facebook.com/events/229907844517176/. Please share this event on your own Facebook page, and encourage others that you know (even if they are not part of the WP Band Program) to share as well!
We will have our kick-off meeting for parents/students on Tuesday, August 21 at 5:00 PM in the Band Room. This meeting will last 30 minutes or less, and Custom Fundraising Solutions will be donating $5 to the Band Program (and ultimately into student accounts) for each parent in attendance!
Look for additional information coming in a specific mattress sale e-mail later this week!
AMAZON FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY!
Even though the holiday season is past us, this is still an excellent tool to raise money for the Band every time you shop at Amazon. The Winter Park High School Alumni Band Association is a registered charity on Smile.Amazon.com, so please remember to use this unique link to shop at Amazon every time, and a small percentage of the sale (at no cost to you) will automatically be sent quarterly to the WPHSABAA account and then donated to the Winter Park Band Program. If we all use this link every time, we can raise funds on an ongoing basis to help the band! https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-0964817
