Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

  • Inquiry-based learning driven by students
  • Learning revolves around a problem (or project) with specified guidelines, requirements, and expectations
  • Requires teacher serve as facilitator (knows when to allow students to learn through the struggle and when to provide needed support)
  • Allows opportunities for students to collaborate, create and communicate to authentic audiences

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

  • Community Based Accountability - Academic Preparation & College Readiness


  • Team meetings (including case managers and/or administrators) where TEKS, student expectations, assessment, and instructional practices are planned and reviewed
  • Opportunities for teams to plan ways to assess "Power Standards," plan for possible pitfalls, review data, collaborate to ensure all students receive exceptional instruction
  • Provide feedback to teachers and teammates on opportunities to refine, revisit and adjust instruction
  • Targeted Planning Process:

  1. STUDY--What do we want students to know and be able to do?--Identify the targeted S.E.
  2. SELECT a common assessment--How will we know if they know it?
  3. CREATE a lesson--What strategies will I use to help students achieve or progress on a targeted S.E.?
  4. ANALYZE and ADJUST
