How to Avoid BURNOUT! Part 1
As we move towards spring break, here are a few strategies to get through the week! ASCD Author, Wendi Pillars gives eight self-care strategies to combat burnout! Here are the first four:
1. Put down the smart phone, especially by 8:30-9pm nightly.
2. Be creative! Write, draw, cook, or build.
3. Get outside! Take time for a hike or simply sit in nature.
4. Eat right. And drink water.
We've got this!

ARTICULATION ~Preparing our students for what's next!
As we begin the last quarter of the school year (wow!) often we think about what we would like our students to bring to their next grade level. When our 6th grade teachers excitedly came to visit our campus with a focused goal to learn what we need for them to prepare these incoming Junior High students; they were not only complimentary about our school-but genuinely wanted to know the best paths to soften student anxiety and to better help us as teachers. Similarly, our English department had a matriculation meeting with Freshman English teachers from Valencia High School a few years back. We were nervous at first for judgments to be made as to how well we prepared these students for HS English. However, it ended up to be a productive discussion on what needs are being met, and what can we do to prepare them for HS writing etc. Ultimately, we want our one year with students to have a positive impact for years to come. To do this we must collaborate together as teachers.
Perhaps in our final quarter department meetings we can have a valuable discussion on what we hope the 7th grade teachers can prepare incoming 8th grade students as we look at our pacing calendars and common formative assessments. What standards are the students struggling with? Can we split up some strands, or hit some harder in 8th grade? Here is an excellent article on the "Ins and outs" of articulation. and a chart to help departments have these collaborations. I also added a video on this subject in my padlet.
