Principal Update
Dear Sheiko Shark Parents,
What a welcome surprise and wonderful present to have our holiday vacation begin one day early. And with the wind chills at 10 below zero, it is good to be home where it is warm and cozy!!
Please note that as we look at the new year, we have many things going on:
First and foremost our NWEA testing. You all received notification of this required assessment testing this week and hope that you will talk to your children about the importance of doing their best and taking their time. We use the results of this test to guide our instruction in reading and in math. Testing dates will be sent home as soon as we schedule them.
Yoga starts for fourth grade in January–one 30 minute session a week for 6 weeks. We have the mats, so nothing is required of you or your children.
Renew Jr starts for third grade. This is a once a week program for eight weeks that zeros in on children making good choices. More information will be sent to you.
Greg Jones, a retired NFL football player, will work with selected fifth grade boys once a week on how to make good choices. There will be a zoom meeting the evening of January 18 for the parents of those selected students.
Our Extended Learning Opportunities program begins. You will be contacted if your child is eligible for this assistance.
Our Third Graders take a trip to Lansing, the state capital, on Friday, January 13 to see how our government works.
Readers are Leaders Assemblies, which is the kick off for our annual Pine Tree program, will be on January 30. The guest speaker will talk about the importance of developing a lifelong love of reading and the many doors that reading opens to all.
And do not forget to put United We Walk on your calendar for Sunday afternoon January 15. This wonderful program was established more than 25 years ago by the West Bloomfield Schools to celebrate the teaching and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year we will gather at the new West Bloomfield Middle School for a short program, a, hopefully, seasonal walk together, and refreshments and activities. Please join us so we can walk together as Sheiko Sharks!!
And one last thing–Fifth grade parents, please mark Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 pm for a Camp Tanuga Meeting. We will meet live and on zoom. This meeting will give you all the information you need about our last hurrah with our fifth graders. It is a wonderful learning experience for your students and a great way to end the school year.
Whew–that is a lot!! We will have to get lots of rest to keep up with the busy month of January.
Have a wonderful holiday holding your family and friends close to your heart.
Respectfully,
Kathy Sheiko
