You might think that it is up to you as a parent to keep your child safe, it can be hard in that sense that this is one battle that is not up to you to win. That includes worrying if your child would "fit in" or "get along with other students at school. The information that now your child is a part of a small minority's can be stressful for most parents. Some parents can get depressed about the sexual orientation or gender identity of their children. It is difficult for parents to realize they can only do nothing to change their children's sexual orinentation.

How do I take care of myself and come to terms with confused or negative feelings I may have?

First of all, know that the negative feelings come from you, not your child. Get to know the LGBT community. Explore the Internet and find other families in your position. Find out where the next PFLAG meets. It doesn't have to be all there is; it will be a big part of his or her life it there is so much more to them, as you might already know.
