Roadrunner Report

September 24, 2021

Hi Aspen Families!

Here are some updates and important information:

Big picture

Hispanic Heritage Month 9/15-10/15

We are proud and excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month here at Aspen. Our students are learning about the history, cultures, traditions, and contributions of those who can trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking countries of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. The annual celebration is observed from September 15 to October 15. Hispanic heritage, history and contributions are deeply woven throughout the past, present, and future of the United States. Around 1/5 of the US population is Hispanic. And in California over 14 million people are Hispanic or Latino.

Grade Level Recess Zones

At this time, Aspen Elementary will be switching play time to playing in grade level zones, instead of class zones. This decision was made after monitoring our current practices, COVID cases and safety protocols, and in alignment with the practices of many surrounding school districts. We will make and communicate any adjustments based on updated health/safety requirements and COVID case information. Students will continue to each lunch at designated tables with students from their class.

Toys on Campus

No toys or sports equipment from home are allowed on campus. Please speak with your child's teacher before brining an item (fidget spinner, Pop It, stress ball, etc.) to be used in the classroom.

Hero's Heart Award

In Partnership with Los Robles Health System: Hero’s Heart Award - Nominate Your Favorite Teacher!

As a means of expressing their gratitude to local teachers, Los Robles Health System is hosting a Hero's Heart Award for community members to nominate teachers that, "demonstrate the meaning of having a 'heart of gold.'" Nominations may be submitted online prior to the Friday, October 15th deadline. Prizes will be awarded to each Hero selected. Learn more here.

Parking Lot Reminders

Here are some reminders to assist us in keeping our students safe in the parking lot:

  • Proceed in the Aspen parking lot at no more than 10 miles per hour.
  • Stay in the right hand lane, move all the way forward, and drop your student off from the right side of the vehicle.
  • Do not allow your child to walk unattended between cars.
  • Never leave your vehicle unattended in the drive-thru lanes.
  • Do not block intersections along Oberlin Avenue while waiting to enter the parking lot.

Parent Representatives Still Needed

We are looking for parents to serve as representatives on our district's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) committee, District English Learner Advisory Council (DELAC), African American Parent Advisory Council (AAPAC), and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning and Others Advisory Council (LGBTQ+ AC) . Please email me if you are interested in serving as an Aspen parent representative on one of these committees. Please know that there is a commitment to attend their monthly meetings.
