News from the Nest - March 2021

In Full Bloom!

March madness has taken on a whole different meaning to me since last year. Well, I don't know about you, but I will always remember March 15th, 2020. As we complete March of 2021, it is interesting that our elementary students are finally back in the building five days a week! Last year we were exiting the building and now we've returned. We are all a bit weary and ready for a little time to relax and refresh before we finish our last stretch of this school year. I am so thankful for your patience as we have had many transitions this school year. I know it hasn't been easy navigating scheudules, remote instruction, and the changes of our calendar. We appreicate your kindness and ALL the many things you have done to brighten our day and support us.

I love Spring and the gentle breeze of a cool morning and a sunny afternoon. It is always fun watching the foliage and flowers come back to life in full bloom. Returning to five days of instruction has felt like we were waking up as well, and beginning to "bloom". We have been forced to learn in new ways this year, "blooming where we've been planted". It hasn't been easy, however, we've learned how to be flexible and learn in new ways. We can't wait until all our students are back on our campus. It felt great having our students and staff all together for an entire week. We have many celebrations that we've missed since last March, but together we are finding new ways to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and teachers. We know we have some catching up to do, but with your support and patience, we will grow and be in full bloom again in no time.

Please review the material below so you can stay updated and informed. If you have any questions or concerns, always give us a call so we can assist you.

Harnett County Schools Health Protocols Update:

The following information is in effect as of Thursday, March 25th:

DISTANCING (from p.7 of the StrongSchools NC Public Health Toolkit)

Social distancing is now referred to as physical distancing. The minimum required between students is three (3) feet. Adults should continue to adhere to six (6) feet physical distancing from students and other adults. No physical barriers are recommended.

COVID-19 POSITIVE CASES

Our protocol for reporting positive COVID-19 cases and exposures HAS NOT changed. All positive COVID cases and exposures should continue being reported to the designated points of contact for the district.

QUARANTINES FOR FULLY VACCINATED EMPLOYEES (from p.13 of the StrongSchools NC Public Health Toolkit)

Staff members who have been fully vaccinated and two (2) weeks have passed since their final dose will not need to quarantine if they are exposed to a positive person. They will only need to quarantine if they are exhibiting symptoms.

If a fully vaccinated staff member has been exposed and is exhibiting COVID symptoms, they will need to follow-up with their primary care physician. If students or staff are given an alternate diagnosis (other than COVID), a physician’s note should be made available clearing them to return to work/school.

DAILY ATTESTATION FORMS

The Daily Screening Checklist (Attestation Form) will now only be required for staff members or if a student is exhibiting symptoms. Temperature checks and paper/electronic attestation form verifications that have been a part of our car rider, bus, and front office routines are also no longer required.

All HCS stakeholders must still comply with exclusionary symptoms and not attend work/school if any are symptoms present. For anyone who is symptomatic and needs to complete an attestation form, they can download the Harnett County Schools app and choose the first icon to have their information recorded or use their previous method for completing a form online.

This year Mrs. Gaines, our Media Coordinator, has been working very hard to capture our year in pictures. I can't wait to look back and see how far we've come during a very transitional time in the life of our school.

The deadline to order yearbooks is Thursday, April 15th, 2021. Extra yearbooks will not be ordered this year, so don't delay in placing your order. You can order your yearbook online at

PIKMYKID - Dismissal System

This year LES has been using PIKMYKID system for all dismissals. PLEASE remember that to speed up the process for getting your child picked up in the afternoons, it is essential that you download the APP to save time.

Car Tags should be visible and displayed for efficiency in car rider afternoon pick up.

If you do not have a cell phone and need to announce to a staff member, you may have to wait longer due to your child moving from the back of the building to the car rider area, and being announced. Thank you for you help with this procedure. We are always happy to assit you if you have any questions.

HELPFUL TIPS

1. Announce in the app at the stop sign. This speeds up the process. When we have to enter the names and numbers, it slows the entire line down.

2. PLEASE DO NOT pass other cars in the line. This is a safety issue because we load some kids on the driver's side.

3. Do not move forward in the line unless you are asked to do so. Your child is given a number to go to and everytime a parent moves up, it throws our number system off. We will get the children safely to their cars without parents having to move forward to a different number.

4. If you do have to pull forward to wait for a child, please pull PAST the number one cone and all the way down to the white fence. Often, parents pull just forward to the number 1 cone and then it again messes up our number system.

5. Please make sure, if transportation changes are made, they are done so in the app. Delegations for other people to pick up your child in the car line, must be done in the app so that when that person arrives and clicks "announce" ALL students name show up. If a parent doesn't delegate, it again slows down the process.

6.Display blue car tag at ALL times regardless of who is out there "calling" names. If you need additional tags, please let your child's teacher know.

More information is available in the newsletter links if you are new to car rider procedures. Please watch the parent information video and register your children for Pikmykid. We have included instructions for how to register on any device. Follow the link below to register your child. You will be given a car tag to display in the event you do not have a phone that works with PIKMYKID. You MUST have this displayed in your front window in order to pick up your child. Otherwise, we will ask you to park and provide a proper ID.
