6th Grade Poetry Unit
How do writers use poetry to express their ideas?
Standards Addressed
LA 6.2 Students will learn and apply writing skills and strategies to communicate.
LA 6.2.2. Students will write in multiple modes for a variety of purposes and audiences across disciplines.
- LA 6.2.2.a.Communicate information and ideas effectively in analytic, argumentative, descriptive, informative, narrative, poetic, persuasive, and reflective modes to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.
- LA 6.2.2.d. Use precise word choice and domain-specific vocabulary to write in a variety of modes.
- LA 6.2.2.e. Compare various mentor texts and/or exemplars to create a similar piece.
Literacy Strategies Incorporated:
Collaborative Learning
Students worked together to analyze and create poetry. The students resembled a team, working towards a common goal.
RAFT
This strategy was used as an exit ticket for one lesson. This required students to think outside of the box, and express their ideas through writing.
Literature Circle
Each student is assigned a role that contributes towards the analysis of text. Students first work with their role group. Next, they discuss with second group, which includes all of the roles.
How is the "BIG" question addressed in my unit?
Multiple Experiences lead to mastery!
Students will be exposed to poetry through reading, creating, discussing, and performing various poems. By experiencing poetry in various ways the students are able to master the content. Students also work together in order to better digest the topic of poetry.
