Using the TEKS Resource System
The Year at a Glance (YAG) and TEKS Verification Document (TVD) are the documents that provide the sequence of the curriculum. These documents bundle the TEKS into curricular units and include a suggested sequence and duration for each unit. They are important because they offer a sequence that ensures all TEKS are addressed within the year and that all STAAR assessed standards are presented prior to the STAAR tests.
You should use the YAG and TVD to:
- View the TEKS taught within the year in a single snapshot
- Organize and plan long-term high quality instruction
- Collaborate about instructional resources with your peers
- Pace instruction and customize sequencing as appropriate
Please remember that I'm learning about the TEKS Resource System just like you are. I'm not a pro, in fact, I'm far from it but I know it's a good tool for assisting us in knowing and understanding the TEKS and what our role is in planning instruction so I'm determined to learn as much about it as I can.
This week I played around in the TEKS Verification Document. I went straight to 3rd grade Math, a subject I hated as a student but loved as a teacher! My favorite part of the TVD is the T and O that are assigned to each TEKS. The T stands for Direct Teach and means that the teacher is providing in depth instruction on the TEKS and the student (are you reading this? Tweet, "I love Sharpies" @PrincipalEllie for a chance to win Sharpies!) is expected to reach mastery level. The O stands for Ongoing and means the student has seen the material behavior and they are reviewing and practicing the TEK as it is embedded in other TEKS.
Why am I telling you this? For starters, it's because I want you to know that I'm trying to learn what you're learning so I can support you. Secondly, I want you to take the time to make sure you're teaching at the expected level, the verb, and that you're staying in your lane. Your job is hard enough without trying to teach last year's curriculum and next year's curriculum while also teaching this year's. Teach your curriculum!
