Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
September 3, 2018
This week seemed like it flew by! Clubs are beginning to meet, sports are in full swing, and oh yeah... academics! As we walked by/through classes students are listening, speaking, problem solving, and engaging in their classwork!
On Tuesday, after our noon dismissal and a delicious lunch by our cafeteria staff, we buckled down to learn about Onenote on our new devices. Breaking up into two levels helped to ensure that everyone would be comfortable as we met them where they were in understanding this helpful tool. This past Tuesday was also Back to School Night. We had a good amount of parents attend! In the gym before they went to "first period" Administration was introduced and talked about how high school is a time where parents and teachers begin to slowly "pass the baton" of responsibility to the students so that when they leave Marian in four years, they will be self-sufficient individuals with ample tools in their tool box to face the world intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Thanks to all of the Faculty who made this night a success, even if it ended with a little bit of a flood!
On Thursday, every teacher should have received an email notifying them about whether you will be evaluated this year or not and by whom. If you do not get an email, please contact Ms. Novy.
First I want to thank our faculty for being so diligent about inputting grades in a timely manner... it really does help the student and parents to be aware of the students' progress. What id did notice though, was that many of you are not putting placeholder zeros and annotations in when the student is absent or missing work. We need to stay consistent on this so that the student is, in these cases, gravely aware that by not turning in those assignments, their grade will indeed suffer... and they will feel more of an urgency to take care of that with you in a timely manner. Please look through your gradebooks to ensure that the zeros are placed there with the proper annotation. This provides the student and parents a clear reason why the grade is dropped. Thank you.
A final reminder... we know that all of our teachers do a great job keeping a watchful eye on our students and their interactions with each other. Unfortunately, there have already been two bullying concerns brought to administrative attention. In order to reduce the possibilities of this, there are a couple of things that we can all do to reduce the opportunities...
- Make sure that you are out in the hallway during passing periods
- Do not allow students to stand at your door waiting for the bell, they should stay in their seats until the bell rings
- Continue to monitor student conversations and interactions while they are in your class
If you determine that bullying behaviors may exist, please intervene immediately, and make sure that you share any information with Mrs. Loy, as she may know other related circumstances that you may not.
Thank you for continuously advocating for all of our students.
Looking ahead...
Happy Labor Day! This will be a short week... but as we know, Marian Central has a way of packing in a lot in a short amount of time!
EVACUATION DRILL THURSDAY, 9 am!
In preparation for this Thursday's evacuation drill (fire drill), please make sure that you familiarize yourself and your students with exit procedures. Remind them that they need to move swiftly and quietly to the designated location and stand quietly as you take attendance. If you are not sure where to go, please refer to the faculty handbook and/or signs in your classroom. You can also reach out to Mrs. Loy if you have additional questions. Also, since all class lists should have been finalized by now, make sure that you have the most up to date rosters with your red/green cards so that you can take attendance and show the card to administration. This will ensure that this drill is safe, accurate, and quick and we can get back to academics in a short amount of time! Thank you.
Active in Academics
Every week, the Administrative Department Team (Mr. DeFrisco, Father Twenty, Ms. Novy, Mrs. Loy. Mr. Maloney, Mr. Price, Mrs. Hilton, Mrs. Bordeaux, Mrs. Houk, & Mr. Taylor) meet to discuss how things are going in each department and what we, collectively, can do to improve and enhance every aspect of our school. We welcome any ideas or concerns you might want us to address. Please contact the appropriate department member and discuss in order for the team to consider. We are all on the same team... Team Marian Central!
Deanery Principal Meetings will be starting this week. This is a great forum for discussing topics such as the transition of students from middle to high school and vertical alignment of curriculum. We have had past visitors to the meeting who have presented activities that our students can do with our Deanery students like engineering and science. If you have an idea that you want to share with the Deanery Principals and would like to present at one of our monthly meetings, please contact Ms. Novy with your idea.
Thank you to those teachers who have already invited me into your classrooms to participate in or experience an activity in your classroom last week. Please remember... I am here to support you and your instructional goals. I will be happy to work beside you as you are working on lesson planning, help you grade papers, coming to see your student do an engaging activity, or even teaming up with students to work on a lab, group activity, or class discussion. Just drop me an email or stop by and let me know how I can support what you do every day in your classroom!
Have a great week!
Have a Blessed Labor Day!
Lord on this Labor Day,
We thank You for the blessing of work.
We ask for strength to complete each day.
We ask for rest when we are weary.
We ask Your guidance for everyone seeking employment,
and we ask that You be with those whose faces
we might never see but who work tirelessly each day
for the good of us all.
Amen.
