Norte Vista High School is among a distinguished group of schools in the State of California that will be recognized and honored for earning a Civic Learning Award for public schools during the California School Recognition Program (CSRP) Awards Ceremony on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at the Disneyland Hotel. The Chief Justice of California and State Superintendent of Public Instruction co-sponsor the Civic Learning Awards for California public schools. The award identifies replicable high-quality models and practices, and recognizes schools’ civic learning efforts.

“These schools have deftly kept students engaged in civic learning through another tough year,” said State Superintendent of Schools, Tony Thurmond, in a news release. “Through these programs, now more important than ever, students are encouraged to have an open dialogue about the social issues that inspire them to learn about our democratic system.”

Norte Vista’s Service Learning Program was able to engage over 300 students in more than 8000 service hours while implementing the pilot for the Seal of Civic Engagement Award for students in 2021-22. The major service projects were created and driven by students. Projects included issues surrounding homelessness, poverty, mental health/wellness, combatting loneliness, period positivity, food insecurity/emergency pantry/tiny pantry, and social/emotional connections.

Alvord is among five school districts in Riverside County that awards a State Seal of Civic Engagement (SSCE) to our students who demonstrate excellence in civics education and participation, and an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the democratic system of government. The seal is affixed to student transcripts, diplomas, or certificates of completion. Statewide, only 181 schools, in 65 school districts, in 25 counties throughout the state bestow this prestigious honor to their students. Norte Vista is among those schools. Congratulations to Principal Marquez and the entire Norte Vista team!

POINT IN TIME YOUTH COUNT FOR HOMELESSNESS

Under the direction of teacher extraordinaire Ms. Amanda Bush, Norte Vista served as a Point in Time Youth Count for Homelessness Deployment Site for Western Riverside. This is a community partnership with the Continuum of Care (CoC) Division, the Department of Housing, and the Homelessness Prevention and Workforce Solutions (HHPWS). The count is held over 3 days and reflects a snapshot of Riverside County's Youth homeless population. Youth are defined in this count as individuals 18-24 years old. Obtaining an accurate count is critical to helping our community attract state and federal funding and support local planning efforts to address homelessness.

Ms. Bush said, "Norte Vista's Global Program students helped to facilitate check in, disbursement of emergency care bags, food for the volunteers doing the surveys and were the best representation of what youth leadership looks like on our campus. The community members encountered praised the student leaders for their maturity, attention to detail, empathy for others and overall drive to make our world a better place. We hope to continue to be a deployment site in the future and assist the county in their efforts to help solve the homelessness crisis."

The Homeless Point in Time Count is a three-day annual event that allows the county to collect valuable information about the diverse experiences of runaway, unaccompanied homeless and unstably-housed youth. Youth Count data provides critical updates on national and local progress towards preventing and ending youth homelessness. Learn more about the Homeless Point in Time program in the brief video below.

SCHOOL SAFETY WEEKLY UPDATE

Among the primary objectives of Measure J, we have prioritized upgrading all school safety infrastructure. Developing uniform methodologies for assessing and addressing school safety infrastructure design has been a process we began in the Spring of 2022, when we established our Office of School Safety. As I have reported in this space, we have conducted uniform comprehensive threat assessments at all district facilities and subsequently developed consistent criteria to measure our safety standards and the threshold level of awareness, responsiveness, and security. As we design Measure J construction projects, safety will remain the primary consideration.

IN CLOSING

On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you for choosing Alvord schools. We strive to be our very best, so that our students can be their very best.

In partnership,

Allan Mucerino
