12-7-2021 Letter From Mr. Monroe

Dear UCS Community,

This morning, the Board of Education and I met with Utica Community Schools high school students as part of a regular outreach to discuss their experiences. Students met around tables with Board members, administrative team members and myself to discuss their hopes, dreams and concerns. As you can imagine, the conversation was wide-ranging – course selections, facilities, how staffing challenges have impacted them, extra-curricular activities – but there were topics that were universal – the tragedy at Oxford High School and the continued impact of the global pandemic.

In our discussions, students spoke about the tremendous support they have received from their entire UCS team – teachers, staff members, and administrators. The students also spoke about the importance of having additional time to reconnect with family and friends through holiday gatherings that were canceled last year.

These feelings mirror the exact feedback I have heard from staff, parents, other student groups and community members over the past week. All of these conversations have reinforced for myself and the Board of Education the need for a change to our school calendar. Currently, we have two half-days on our schedule during the week that begins our traditional break. Based on a number of considerations outlined in the remainder of this letter, we are revising our school calendar by removing the half days on Monday, December 20 and Tuesday, December 21. In addition, Friday, December 17 will mark the end of the semester and will be a half-day for all students. Our principals will be sharing additional information on how this will impact your children’s schedule.

The revised calendar is the right thing to do for our students, families and staff. We are taking this step for several reasons: First, with the rising number of COVID-19 cases and the emergence of a new variant, we want to reduce the possible spread before families gather to celebrate their traditions. Second, considering the recent school violence, we want our students to have an opportunity to regroup and engage with family and friends. Finally, given the current level of staff shortages and the typical number of substitutes needed this time of year, we want to prevent potential problems with key services and classroom supervision during those days.

Considering the staff sustainability issues, UCS continues to make adjustments on hiring, retention, service delivery and compensation. Across our district, team members have stepped up to help ensure that needed services for our students and families continue in a quality fashion. I am proud of the resiliency of this staff and their commitment to do whatever needs to be done to support this community.

In addition, working with the Macomb County Health Department to adjust COVID-19 protocols, we have maintained our long-range goal of in-person learning. Recently, these adjustments have included the use of face coverings and remote learning in select classrooms, grades and even schools. We continue to work with the health department and Ascension MyHealth Urgent Care to help healthy children remain in school if they were identified as close contacts.

Despite these successes, real challenges remain. The adjustment to the school calendar is another example of our work to proactively stay ahead of concerns. I have worked with our staff to make calendar changes related to secondary exams and our overall year end schedule. Your building administrators will be sharing specific information regarding any changes to your child’s classroom schedule, particularly as it relates to secondary exams. Our website reflects the schedule changes.

Finally, I want to express appreciation for your partnership and support. As you celebrate this season with your friends and family members, may you experience good health, happiness and great peace!

  • Breakfast & lunch meals are available for virtual enrolled students only.
  • Meals must be pre-ordered by Thursday the week before to ensure meal availability.
  • For August 31 pickup we will allow meal orders until August 30.
  • Meals can be ordered at www.sendmoneytoschool.com.
  • You will need your student's school ID number. This is available on Powerschools as well as from your school's main office.

  • You will only be able to order meals for those students in Virtual School.
  • Students attending in person learning, meals are available in their buildings during specified meal times.
  • Menus for both programs will be different so please check the menu for your student's specified school and program.
  • Meals are available for pickup at Stevenson (door 25) & Eisenhower (door 1) from 12:30-1:30pm on Mondays (Tuesdays when holidays are on Mondays) near the main offices.
  • You must park and enter the designated door to pickup these meals. There is currently no outside pickup.
  • You receive enough breakfasts and lunches to cover the school days. Non-school days are not allowed in the current program.

2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday K-12 Video Contest

Macomb County students are invited to submit a video presentation of a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students will be judged on accuracy, composure, voice quality, posture and physical dynamics, and observance of time limit. Attached are the guidelines for this contest. All entries are due by Friday, December 17, 2021.


MASFP and the national affiliate, the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators (NAFEPA) released the scholarship application for high school seniors. The NAFEPA application also serves as the application for the MASFPS scholarships. Current high school seniors who are on track to graduate at the conclusion of the 2021-22 academic year are eligible to apply. The application and details about both scholarship programs are attached (2A, 2B).

Applications must be postmarked and mailed directly to Jan Callis the MASFPS Scholarship Chairperson and State NAFEPA representative, by January 7, 2022 at 2111 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford, MI 48328. MASFPS will award three state-level scholarships. The applications of the top two state awardees will be submitted to NAFEPA to be considered for one of the four national scholarships. You can review the descriptions of the four NAFEPA scholarships on the NAFEPA website. Please share the scholarship documents with current seniors. The application documents will also be posted soon on NAFEPA page of the MASFPS Website.

2022 Superintendent’s Scholarship

UCS graduating seniors are invited to apply for the 2022 Superintendent’s Scholarship awards program. The scholarships are funded with proceeds from the Utica Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence’s annual Evening of Excellence and other sources.

Online applications will go live on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Students are required to submit a copy of their high school transcript as well as receive one recommendation from a teacher, school counselor, administrator or non-family member. The individual making the recommendation will need to submit an online appraisal.

In addition to the Superintendent’s Scholarship, there are several optional scholarship opportunities within the application – the Brett Klenow Scholarship, the Stefan’s Hope Scholarship, the Larry M. Smith Memorial Scholarship, and the Richard LaBaere Educational Scholarship.

Please encourage students to complete the online application available on December 7 at: www.UticaK12.org/SuperintendentScholarship or on the UCS home page under “Students” in the mid-menu on the center of the page. The deadline to submit the completed application and appraisal is 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.
