Indian Valley Education Foundation Awards Four Salford Hills Projects
Congratulation e-mails flowed last week as IVEF awarded four Salford Hills grants. Here’s a synopsis of each:
- Mindful Morning – Funds supplies for our Thursday morning program. $522
- #Empathy in Action – Keeps Empathy in Action field trips alive this year. $1200
- Picture Perfect STEM – Materials to supply our STEM needs that coincide with the Picture Perfect Program. $1151
- Choose STEM – Materials to supply 4th grade STEM projects. $1186
Of the 26 proposals IVEF funded 19 grants totaling $17,000. How fortunate that SH grabbed 4 of those 19 (21%).
Many thanks to all our grant writers including Berdine Leinbach, Jackie Grzywacz., Linda Moyer, Denise Randall, Janet Smith, Meredith Ehst, Heidi Pekar, and Tricia Pfeil. We couldn’t be prouder. There are many things which make organizations not just good, but great. Idea-rich is near the top of the list. Thanks to those who had a vision and were willing to put funding in place to make the dream become a reality. In as much, we all benefit.
Information About Lice
SOUDERTON AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT
SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES
Due to recent concerns about cases of lice in our community our health suite would like to relay the following information...
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other health authorities, head lice are not a health hazard or sign of uncleanliness and are not responsible for the spread of any disease. Head lice are common among children. Lice can be readily transmitted in schools, homes, camps, backyards, and playgrounds; almost any community setting. Nits (lice eggs) that are not viable (½ inch or more from the scalp) do not cause the spread of head lice.
If your child, or family member, have nits/lice, please remember to contact your school nurse so she can help guide you through the care process for you and your family. Please also remember to reach out to those close to you. Children may have connections with others in many different grades and schools so this is the best at getting the word out. Remember that lice can be present in any community setting so frequent head checks by parents can be helpful throughout the year!

Superintendent's Corner: Fall 2019
Dear SASD Parent/Guardian,
I want to begin the autumn message by thanking our entire community for the outpouring of support during our network disruption recovery. We have made significant progress in restoring our systems. Once again, I am reminded how resourceful our community is and how we always emerge from difficult circumstances as a stronger organization.
Moving forward, I am pleased to report that there are several exciting things happening:
• Full-Day Kindergarten: For well over a year, the Administration and School Board have been studying the feasibility of implementing Full-Day Kindergarten. The first phase of this study was identifying the key themes in the research on the effectiveness of a full-day program including an increase in school readiness, higher academic achievement, improved social and emotional outcomes, and a reduction in retention. The next phase of our study will be evaluating our facilities and developing a staffing plan that will coexist within our budget, with the goal of implementation in the 2021-2022 school year.
• Safe Schools: Over the course of several years, the Administration and School Board have focused on keeping our schools safe. This year’s budget allowed us to add a third School Police Officer as well as provide additional funding for training and equipment. We collaborate closely with local and county officials and have received over $150,000 in safe school grant money to support our work.
• The Indian Valley Education Foundation: The Foundation continues to be a valued asset in our district providing Classroom Innovation Grants that directly benefit our students. Please check out the latest IVEF news and events at https://indianvalleyef.org.
• Athletics: I hope you had the chance to cheer on our student-athletes this fall. The girls field hockey team claimed the Suburban One Continental Championship - the first time since 2004! Our Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Tennis, Golf and Water Polo teams all competed at either the conference or district level, and our football team is having one of its best years ever!
I also hope that you have the opportunity to be in the audience for one or more of our arts programs this fall. Our students' musical and stage productions are always a delight.
Finally, along with our Board of School Directors, I have been visiting some of our local senior living communities. I always take pleasure in hearing from stakeholders, and am thankful for the investment that all of our residents make in the education of our community’s children.
I hope that you enjoy the fall season with friends and family. Stay tuned for another Superintendent’s Corner message in November.
Sincerely,
Frank T. Gallagher, Ed.D.
