This book is about a boy named Bruno who is growing up during the Holocaust. He is frustrated to learn that he and his family have to move away because his dad is in the German military. When they move, Bruno goes exploring after his mother told him not to. When he gets to a fence, a boy his age is on the other side. His name was Schmuel. They become best friends even though they can't do anything together except talk. One day, Bruno asks Schmuel why he is on the other side of the fence. Schmuel said it was because he is a Jew. One day, Shmuel was eating food Bruno gave to him, he was beaten because of it. The next time they see each other, Schmuel has bruises and cuts all over his face. Bruno apologized and they became friends again. After that, Schmuel's dad goes missing. Bruno says he will do anything he can do to help. So, Schmuel lifts up the fence and Bruno crawls under it. Schmuel goes and gets Bruno a uniform. After no luck of finding his dad, they have to go on a march. Without the prisoners knowing, they are lead into a gas chamber. Bruno and Schmuel die together as best friends.
