The Bulldog Bark
Chartwell School Weekly News and Highlights
September 19th, 2019
Beautiful weather makes September an ideal month for field experiences. These off-campus adventures help our students learn about the world, themselves, and each other. Last week's trip to the ropes course was a wonderful way for our middle schoolers to have fun, face fears, and bond as a group. Our high schoolers will benefit similarly from our upcoming visit to the Bar SZ ranch for two nights next week. Please be sure to scroll all the way down to see information about that upcoming field experience and fill out the required waiver form.

Finger Spelling
Mrs. Garcia’s class is finger-spelling in Structured Literacy. Orton–Gillingham was the first teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds.
The highly structured approach introduced the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time.
It also pioneered the “multisensory” approach to teaching reading, which is considered highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia.
This means that instructors use sight, hearing, touch and movement to help students connect language with letters and words.
Coffee Break
On Friday mornings, Mrs. Price’s class reads scholastic news at work over “coffee” (hot chocolate). They earn their paychecks for the week to use towards classroom rewards. She paid out a lot of bonuses last week! Good job, guys!

Field Experience Expectations
We often tell the students that THEY are the reason we are able to go on fun, overnight experiences. Their behavior during field experiences has been wonderful; hence, we get to keep taking trips like this. On that note, it's important that students understand that the health and safety of all students is the top priority on this (and any) field experience. Any student who breaks our school standards, rights and responsibilities, or policies will be required to go home immediately and at the family’s expense. In this instance, a Standards Committee Meeting will be held upon our return to campus.
