2018-2019 School Year: Volume 14: Week of December 3, 2018
Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
December is here....teachers sure can feel it
December is here. Holiday decorations are out. Holiday shopping has begun and kids are starting to get very excited for the holidays. With all of this excitement, we have noticed an increase in poor behavior at Grandview. Please help to support us as we continue to put learning first as there are still three weeks until Holiday Break. As soon as we return from break, our winter NWEA will commence and so the teachers are hoping to hit the standards and continue to challenge your children. Though it is becoming difficult as focus is not there. Please help to support learning with conversations with your children to help instill the focus that we know they can have.
Additionally, there has been an increase in inappropriate language used during unstructured time at school; i.e., the hallway, recess and the lunchroom. That is not tolerated. We, at Grandview, have a zero tolerance for inappropriate language. You will see that we are going to begin a Reflection Room at Grandview this week. We are doing this to help the students to reflect on their behavior and to start to see the impact of their actions. As the building principal, I am concerned as to the shift of the culture and are looking to find creative ways to meet our students and help to raise kinder, gentler, and independent students that I believe will make an impact in our future. Please read below for more information about the Reflection Room and help support us by having conversations with your children as to what is appropriate and inappropriate language at school.
Your Proud Principal,
Melissa Carruth, Ed.S
Another week of fun and learning!

Drills
1) . Fire Drill - We have 5 fire drills a year. These drills are done during class and non-class time. Some are known and some are unknown. We ask the students to exit quietly following their teacher by the closest exit and away from the building.
2) . Tornado Drill - We have 2 drills a year. One in the fall and one in the spring. The students go to a location the is specific to each class and away from glass. They assume the same position that we practiced when we were kids, but no text book is needed to protect their head. Research shows that your hands are actually safer to protect your spine, than a book.
3) . Lockdown Drill -- We practice 3 hard lockdown. In a hard lockdown, the students hide within their classroom so that they are not seen or heard as you walk up and down the hallways. The doors are locked. We do this to practice should an intruder enter our building. We are looking at piloting a new protocol for the hard lockdown that will include an evacuation component. We also practice a soft lockdown. This is where the students can resume teaching and learning within their classroom, they just cannot leave to go to the exterior of the school and sometimes even the hallways. We practice this in case there is a safety emergency occurring in a part of the school and we do not want the students to see or if we received word that the outside area is unsafe, but the halls of Grandview are safe.
I take safety very serious and I believe that safety is one of my top 3 responsibilities as the building leader. I always include on our calendar when we have drills so that you can bring conversation about them with your child.

Grandview Math Night
Has been rescheduled. The new date is Tuesday, January 29th. Ford engineers will be our volunteers. Additionally, Ford will be sponsoring the purchase of 40 game kits for the Family Game Night. It should be an amazing night, so mark your calendars!
Tardy
We have had a lot of students arriving late. Tardies start at 8:40 and will be tracked. If your child comes in after the class did the lunch count, then they will automatically get PB&J as their lunch choice. Lunch counts will not be finalized until after 8:40. If you know your child is going to be late, then please call in the tardy and select your child's lunch choice to ensure that they can get another choice. Our lunch counts are becoming very lopsided and we need to ensure that the children are getting the choice that they signed up for. Also we need our students on time for school!!

Bookflix for Grandview Families
The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....
https://digital.scholastic.com/site/launch/bkflix?ucn=600063987
There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.
Username: grandvw
Password: flix
If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.
This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.
Enjoy!!!
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!
Transportation Changes
Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!
