ELA Update
We have begun our second anthology. Please continue to read over the blue “School-Home Connection” paper that comes home each Monday.
I am also sending home a paper with the directions, user name and password to get onto Think Central (Storytown). Please do not go ahead and read the stories that we will be reading in class.
Home Reader Program
This will be the start of the fourth week of the home reader program. Each night your child is expected to read the book in his/her manila folder and record it on their reading log. You are required to sign the log each night. The level that your child is placed at should be a level that they are able to read independently. The books may seem “easy”. That is the way it is supposed to be! The purpose of reading at your independent reading level at this age is to build fluency, a good reading rate, and to ensure that your child builds the confidence needed to begin a life-time love of reading. Remember that reading is not just being able to “read” the words on the page. Reading entails building meaning by comprehending what is read and being able to take that information and make inferences, predictions and connections.
If your child finishes the book and still has time left in their 15 minutes of reading block, feel free to supplement their reading with books you have at home, or have your child practice re-reading the book.
We developed this program to help parents know what their child is capable of reading at an independent level.
Math Update
We started our Timed Math Facts today. The students did very well on it. Please continue to practice the math facts with your child.
Homework packets are due on the day of the test – this is posted on the Weekly Homework Checklist. If your child does not turn in this packet, it will be reflected on their report card.
Science and Social Studies
We will start Unit 4 in our Social Studies book. Then, we will learn about animals and end the month by learning about Thanksgiving.
Conferences
Conference dates for 1st-4th grades are on Tuesday, November 26th and Wednesday, November 27th. Please send in the forms as soon as possible so I can start scheduling conference times. Please know that we are only allotted a short amount of time to meet. Please be punctual so that the schedule for the day is not interrupted. I really appreciate your help with this.
Have a Wonderful November!
Happy Thanksgiving!
