The Sneak Peek
Sept. 25th, 2017
Classroom Curriculum
Reading - This week we will begin guided reading groups. Guided reading groups are created based on skills, strategies, and reading levels. Children work in a small group to build skills on their level with the teacher. Each child meets with the teacher in guided reading groups everyday!
We are also beginning Words Their Way. Words Their Way is our spelling program. Each child took the spelling assessment last week that determines which list they will begin on. This is a differentiated program so not every child will have the same list. Spelling list are presented to students as sorts and are based on spelling patterns. Children will work on each spelling list for 2 weeks in class. If your child is struggling to make progress with their spelling sort we may ask for your help at home!
We are excited to finishing up our first reading unit and will be celebrating Friday with 'Book Worms!'
Writing - We continue to work on personal narratives. Children are delving deeper into developing our characters and adding details to our writing. This week we will be 'unfreezing' our characters by adding movement, dialogue and 'bringing the inside out' by sharing their feelings.
Math - We continue to work on developing our understanding of place value. We will be differentiating by using numbers 10 - 120! At home encourage your child to count different manipulatives by creating groups of ten and left overs (or ones).
Science - We are ready for Fall! We will be learning about the life cycle and parts of a pumpkin this week as we build our background knowledge on pumpkins. We are looking forward to our visit to Patterson's Farm!
