STAAR 101
A resource for learning the rules of the TX testing system
How can I use this newsletter?
What structures do I need to know and understand about STAAR?
Readiness standards are TEKS tested EVERY year on that grade's test.
Supporting standards are TEKS tested in ROTATING years (maybe once every 3 years) on that grade's test.
The GCISD curriculum documents for each subject denote whether standards are readiness or supporting. State lists of these standards are also available on this page (click on the subject of interest then see the link under each grade level called "Grade XX Reading Assessed Curriculum").
2. Assessment Blueprints
These documents show teachers the architecture of the tests. How many questions will come from which reporting category? How many questions will come from readiness standards and how many will come from supporting standards? How many field test items will be included on each exam? Blueprints are available on this page (click on the subject of interest then see link under each grade level called "Grade XX Reading Blueprint").
3. Test Design Schematics (in reading and writing assessments)
How many reading passages will be on a grade level's reading test? How many and which genre of writing compositions will students be expected to compose? How many revision vs. editing multiple-choice items will there be on the writing test? Schematics are available on this page (click on the subject of interest then see link under each grade level called "Grade XX Reading Blueprint").
4. Reference Materials (math assessments)
What reference materials (including samples of graph paper) are available to students for use on assessments? These can be found by clicking on this page and see the grade/resource of interest.
