From the HRE Clinic
URGENT! Please complete the on-line Student Health Information form and the Community Health Consent to Treat form. Both of these forms can be found under the Online Forms tab in Skyward. It is critical that we have every student’s health information on file. Please note that our school nurses are now employed through Community Health and there is a new consent form as a part of our online back to school forms. It is extremely important that you give your consent on this form which will allow our school nurses to treat your child should they need to go to the clinic. Thank you!!
As a reminder, there is not a nurse on duty outside of normal school hours and all medications are kept secured in the nurse’s office. If your child participates in a before or after school sponsored activity and you would like for your student’s emergency medication to be made available, please notify the nurse in advance in order to make these arrangements. You may contact either Shawn Fleenor (M/W/F) or Ann DeWael (T/Th). Both may be reached by phone at 915-4240.
Student Handbook 19-20
The HRE 2019-20 Student Handbook has been posted to the school's website. Please use the following link to access it.
We encourage you to review the handbook at your earliest convenience. Should you have any questions, please contact the HRE office at 317-915-4240. Our staff is available to assist you. We are looking forward to a great school year.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN THE LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER
The Hoosier Road Elementary Library/Media Center stays a well-oiled machine because of countless hours of parent volunteers. Therefore, we are seeking volunteers to come help in the library preferably during your child's class's scheduled library time. Volunteers would primarily assist with checking out and shelving of books. Please email Sarah Dobson at sdobson@hse.k12.in.us if you are interested. THANK YOU!
Hearing and Speech Screenings
Attention 3rd and 4th Grade Parents
This year 3rd and 4th grade students will be introduced to their first independent instrument; the recorder. Please note that our fourth graders will be starting in October and our third graders will be starting at the start of second semester. We have to order at the beginning of the year for both grades because the fourth graders will be starting in a couple of months. Please click on the link below to view a printable copy of the recorder order form. All 3rd and 4th grade students will be required to have a recorder.
School Picture Day Friday, September 13th
Photographers from Lifetouch Studios will be at Hoosier Road on Friday, September 13th to take our annual school pictures! As always, pictures will be available for purchase. Even though purchasing photos is strictly optional, all students will be photographed and their photos will appear in the school yearbook. Flyers will be sent home closer to Picture Day!
Outdoor Recess
As a rule, if the temperature is less than 95 degrees Fahrenheit, students will go outside for their full recess. When the temperature is at or above 95 degrees Fahrenheit or the humidity is at or above 95%, recess time will be at the discretion of teachers or the principal who may choose to shorten the time outdoors or stay inside.
Teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess; students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess. All outdoor recess and activities will be canceled when temperatures soar to 100 degrees or higher. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
If your child is prone to sunburn, please make sure to help them apply sunscreen at home each day before they come to school as it is not provided by teachers. Also, remember that kids love to run and play—so please make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather including no flip flops which tend to fall off, break, cause stubbed toes or inhibit play!
HRE Guidelines for Driver Drop-off and Pick-up Line
In an effort to insure the safety of our student body and staff, we ask all drivers to follow these guidelines when dropping off and picking up students:
- Absolutely NO CELL PHONE USAGE in the car line. Full attention must be given while unloading and loading children.
- DO NOT PULL AROUND OTHER VEHICLES in the car line, unless directed to do so by staff members. SINGLE FILE TRAFFIC ONLY while unloading and loading children.
- Children should exit and enter vehicles from the PASSENGER SIDE ONLY. This insures students a safe path to the sidewalk. PARENTS SHOULD REMAIN IN THE VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES. Staff members will assist those students who need help exiting or entering a vehicle. For student safety, we DO NOT allow parents to park vehicles and walk up to receive children unless previously approved through school administration.
- Common driver courtesy is required at all times.

Volunteers and Lunch Visitors
Volunteers and Visitors
Hoosier Road Elementary always has many opportunities for parents to become involved. Whether it’s through volunteering in the classroom or a PTO event, attending classroom activities or even eating lunch with your child, you must have a valid background check on file and view the anti-bullying training on-line. Background checks are valid for three years. Please allow up to 6 business days for checks to be completed. Please follow this link for complete directions: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
We want you to be able to interact with our students but we also need to adhere to strict safety guidelines set forth by our school district. Look for an email from Safe Visitor Solutions which will issue a bar code unique to you. Please bring that bar code (on your phone or on paper) on your first visit to HRE so we may take your photo! Thank you for your compliance and for helping to keep all of our students safe.
Lunch Visitors
We will start allowing lunch visitors after Labor Day. Please note that we have very limited seating for lunch visitors. In order to come have lunch with your child, you must call the office to make a reservation. We only take same day reservations. Our phones turn on at 8am and we recommend that you call as soon as possible to ensure that you get a seat. If there will be more than one person with you, we will need a reservation for each guest (including siblings that require a chair). Please make sure that all guests (over 18) have a valid background check on file. If you choose to order a school lunch, please order that when you call. All adult lunches cost $3.45 and the cafeteria asks that you bring cash or a check (please bring exact change if possible).

School Directory
We have had a number of parents wanting to find ways to schedule playdates, parties, etc. with their children’s classmates. HSE has made this possible with our Online School Directory. This service is only available for those families that choose to “OPT IN”.
You may select what information you would like other parents to see (such as address, phone numbers) for birthday invitations and the like. If you would like to “OPT IN” please follow the steps below:
- Login to Skyward
- Click on “MY ACCOUNT” tab in the upper right corner
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the School Directory section
- Choose which information you would like to share
- Click Save in the upper right corner
Please note that the only people that will have access to this, are the families at Hoosier Road Elementary. If you have older children at other schools, their information will only be shared with the families at their school. We hope this will help our students to be able to stay connected outside of school hours.
