History of Valentine's Day
In Rome many soldiers started to convert into Christianity because Emperor Claudius II created strict laws where marriage was prohibited for young men. He wanted his soldiers to focus on Rome, and only on Rome. Saint Valentine broke the rules and started marrying the soldiers, creating his reputation and showing the value of love. Emperor Claudius II found out about the crime and imprisoned Saint Valentine. He was executed on February 14th, 270, thus leading for the date for Valentine’s day. The date was proclaimed by the Pope of the Catholic church, and later in the Middle Ages by a poet Chaucer. The day was linked to romance where the tradition started of expressing love.
Now, we celebrate this special date with our loved ones, with dinners, lunches or small gatherings. Chocolates, flowers and cards are exchanged to show appreciation to each other. It is also important to remember that this should not be the only day to show some love to the people around us! With simple gestures and small actions, we can express love and friendship to others.
