Transgender Day of Remembrance
Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. The Limestone District School Board honors all those transgender people whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence this year and over the years. We continue to remain steadfastly committed to ensuring that our school environments are inclusive and supportive of our trans and non-binary community.
Did you know...
Mental health issues were a key concern. Nearly two-thirds reported self-harm in the past year; a similar number reported serious thoughts of suicide; and more than 1 in 3 had attempted suicide
Trans youth who had supportive adults both inside and outside their family were four times more likely to report good or excellent mental health, and were far less likely to have considered suicide.
Trans youth generally reported low connectedness to school, but those who reported higher school connectedness were twice as likely to report having good mental health.
We All Have A Job To Do
Below are statistics from the Human Rights Commission, indicating this work is a priority.
Self-Reflection: Have you...
- planned to teach health in a way that acknowledges the fluidity of gender identities and expressions, which can change over time?
- asked people what their pronouns are and used them? Are all staff aware of students' preferred pronouns, including OTs?
- avoided the assumption that trans people are lesbian, gay, bisexual or queer?
- supported the establishment and/or activities of an LGBTQ-positive club at your school?
- ensured the resources used in class are representative of varying gender identities?
- used symbols (flags, stickers) to show students and others that you support gender diversity?
- displayed on a bulletin board the number for an LGBTQ helpline that offers students confidential support?
