The Vartan Gregorian School Tribune

From the desk of Mr. Russo

August 2019

Let me just start out by saying what a slow, uneventful summer this has been. Just your typical lazy summer with no news about our school, or the district. Nothing to see here.

Too soon?

What a few weeks it has been! I truly appreciate all of the families, community members, and educators who have reached out to me. It has been a mixed bag of optimism, harsh realities, and above all, a willingness to push forward and work together. Many of the voices that were heard at the community forums were members of the Vartan family. Let me assure you that every email, phone call, and meeting has been meaningful. Your commitment to the students and our school community is truly inspiring.

Looking ahead, I know that we are going to have a great year. I've heard so many wonderful things about our talented staff. Just walking in many of the rooms, it's easy to see how dedicated they are. Many of the structural issues here at VG are being remedied. Room 8 is finally being rebuilt and will become a model classroom, with state of the art furniture that promotes student choice. I know Ms. DeMello is excited to finally get her room back! The roof is also in the process of being worked on. This project is likely to take some time so please be patient. We've also made some minor improvements throughout the summer to make the school more welcoming. Our teachers are hopefully enjoying their summer, but once the days of August start to melt off the calendar, rest assured that they will be actively planning for the year ahead. Please enjoy the next few weeks of summer as it is a special time of year in our great state.

Going forward, as the title indicates, I will be sending out a newsletter once a month. The format will continue to evolve. Other communication will come via Kinvo, backpacked letters, classroom teacher correspondence, emails, etc. If anyone has any critiques or thoughts that would make this more informative, please pass those ideas along. Please see the link at the bottom of the newsletter for details on how to subscribe.

Bio - Mr. Russo

Every month, I will profile a member of the Vartan Community. Since no one else is really around this time of year, I will start with myself.

This is my 17th year as an educator in Providence. I have worked as a classroom teacher, math coach, basketball coach, and assistant principal. Before becoming an educator, I worked for U.S. Airways, and then The Vantage Group in Boston. I spent about 5 years in the travel industry. At some point during this time, I realized that I was unfulfilled and decided to get involved in public education. I went back to school and earned my Master's in Education at Rhode Island College. Just a few years ago, I completed my Administration Degree at Providence College.

I am married with a soon to be four year old son. My wife is a reading specialist in West Warwick. As a family we enjoy traveling quite a bit. This summer we stayed exclusively in New England, visiting North Conway, Springfield (VT), Block Island, and Harwich Port. Next summer, we plan on traveling to Oregon and Washington.

When I have some down time, which is infrequent, I enjoy hiking, cooking, reading, and playing sports. I only read 2 books this summer, both related to educational leadership. I typically read historical non-fiction. I'm always looking for a good recommendation!
