Mason Gazette
March 25, 2018
Dear Mason Families,
As we head into Spring Break, we will finish strong with a 4-day week (no school Friday!) filled with learning and fun! Everyone is excited to see all our wonderful 3rd-5th graders who will be participating in our Annual Mason Talent Show! It is always awesome to see our students share their talents with our community! Special shout out to Mrs. Demas and Mrs. Collins for making this event a huge success every year!
Have a wonderful break,
Roy Bishop, Jr.
Principal
Reading Tip of the Week:
- Map it Out It’s important to provide your child with a variety of fiction and non-fiction reading. A fun way to do this is to get a map and show your child(ren) the way from your house to the grocery store or another familiar destination. Have your child write out the directions, street by street, and then read them to you as you walk or drive to the store – like a living GPS!
“Get Caught Reading” Call Night March 28th
Young 5s, K, and 1 6:30-7: 00 pm
2 and 3 7:00-7:30 pm
4 and 5 7:30-8:00 pm
* We will be randomly (drawing names from the reading tickets that were turned in over the course of the entire month of March) selecting several students from each grade level on March 28th who will receive a call at their house from Mrs. MacGillis. If Mrs. MacGillis calls your house and you are reading, you will receive a special prize!!! While we would love to call every reader, unfortunately, this isn't possible. Please let your child(ren) know that if they don't receive a phone call that we are still very proud of their reading efforts!
Dinner Conversations:
-What would you like to do over break?
-Why is reading important?
-Is there anything your teacher can do to get you to like reading more?
Fun Writing Opportunity for March:
1. Name one Famous African American person you would like to know more about and why?
2. March is Women's History Month! Why is it important to celebrate Women's History Month?
March's Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) Focus
Office Behavior- Treating people in the office with respect and using our manners when asking for supplies.
March's Character Word of the Month: Empathy- Empathy is the ability to understand how someone else is feeling or to understand the situation they are in. It is the ability to “put yourself in someone else's shoes” and to understand the way a situation might make them feel.

Uh Oh!! Did you miss an important call from the school?
Please update your contact info
It is extremely important that we be able to reach someone in case of an emergency. In addition, when a child does not arrive at school, and a parent does not call in the absence on our attendance line (313-432-4401), we have no way of knowing if that child is safe at home.
Please take a moment to change your phone setting to accept calls, keep your contact information updated in the MiStar Parent Portal, possibly add an additional emergency contact, and add our attendance phone number into your phone for easy access to report absences.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe!
Please empty your mailbox!! Did you know that you need to empty the deleted folder for your voicemail? If your voicemail is full you could be missing an important call from the school about your student.
