Math Norms
Kindergarten Math
Students will identify shapes as two-dimensional (flat) or three-dimensional (solid). They will name squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres regardless of orientation and size. Students will use terms such as "above," "below," "besides," "next to," "in front of," and "behind" to describe the relative position of shapes in their environment.
Students will deepen their understandings of two- and three-dimensional shapes. Students will analyze and compare attributes of shapes shown in different sizes and orientations. Students will build shapes using concrete materials, and use them to draw other shapes. Students will also compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.
1st Grade Math
Topic 5 focuses on the understanding that the equal sign indicates that both sides of an equation represent the same value. Students determine whether addition and subtraction equations are true or false, and they find the missing number in addition and subtraction equations. The Associative Property of Addition is also introduced as a way to group numbers flexibly to solve problems with three addends.
In Topic 6, students explore concepts of data analysis involving up to three categories of data. Students collect, organize, represent, and interpret data. Many of the problems about data are structured to represent a variety of addition situations (total number of data points, how many in each category) and subtraction situations (how many more, how many fewer).
2nd Grade Math
Topic 6 focuses on developing computation fluency in subtraction within 100 by using understanding of place value, properties of operations, mental math, and the partial-differences strategy.
Students us place-value blocks and drawings of place-value blocks to find differences. These representations support understanding of how to subtract tens from tens and ones from ones, and how to regroup.
Topic 7 focuses on representing and solving one- and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction situations. Students represent the numerical relationships in word problems using drawings, bar diagrams, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number. Then they fluently add and subtract within 100 to find the solution. They also determine the unknown quantity in addition and subtraction equations.
