Message from Principal Dorken
In my closing message to our students, I shared that they all have so much to be proud of from this past school year, from a learning perspective as well as from a character perspective. As our staff and I reflected together over our final days this week, a theme that was very prevalent was the children’s resilience. It was inspiring and extremely encouraging, all year long. While the 2020-21 school year was unlike anything we had experienced before, or could have ever have anticipated, the strength and spirit of our students was certainly something worthy of highlighting and celebrating. Children are just amazing.
This year’s school experience being as successful as it was, all things considered, was due to an entire community pulling together to make it so. That’s not to say that all voices were consistently in agreement, but the underlying motivation for the collective energy and effort was the overall well being of the children. We navigated this challenging path to the very best of our ability and in retrospect, and relative to the broader educational landscape, we can stand by what we accomplished together. There are so many thanks to go around.
To our Board of Education. To our District Administration. To our team of building leaders. To every single staff member in every one of our schools. To every parent, extended family member and caregiver. To every volunteer who gave so generously of their time. To every child learning and persevering every single day, whether in person or remotely. High praise is due to everyone. We made it!
We wish our 2nd graders continued growth and success as they move over to Pleasant Ridge (or other schools) next year. We appreciate all that has accompanied our journey together with them during their time as students at Lyon. We wish ALL of our students continued prosperity and overall well being, and we wish everyone a wonderful and healthy summer!
We highly recommend that regular, pleasure reading is among your children’s activities throughout June, July and August. We also hope you get to spend lots of quality time together as a family outside of the pace of a busy school year. Your full presence as a parent, whenever you can provide it, is perhaps the greatest gift you can give your children. I sincerely hope that this summer finds you with ample time to enjoy your children, their interests, their curiosities, and the world from their perspective at this wonderful time in their lives. It truly goes by quickly, so enjoy it with them thoroughly.
On a personal note, it has been one of the great privileges of my life to have served as the principal of Lyon for the past 15 years. I have learned so much and am grateful for all of the support and kindness I have received from this community. Lyon is a special place, and I know that wonderful things will continue. Take care.
Message from Principal Friedman
Pleasant Ridge Families,
Thank you. Thank you for your partnership and support this year. Thank you for the flexibility you demonstrated throughout all our platform changes this year. Thank you for supporting your kids at home during remote learning. Thank you for acknowledging our staff throughout the year for their efforts. Thank you for the daily health checks and keeping your kids at home when they weren’t feeling well. Thank you for your understanding as we navigated lots of ‘newness’ on our end. Simply put, thank you.
It’s been a year at school none of us will ever forget. I’m so proud of our students who were resilient and determined. Their energy and enthusiasm kept us strong throughout the year. And with the return to full days, they made it feel normal again. It was such a pleasure to see some of our end of year traditions happen, the joy from students was contagious. I’m proud of every single Eagle that made it to the finish line this year, we have so many positives to build on moving into next year.
We all deserve a restorative summer break. The mental and physical fatigue of a school year is real and this year pushed the limits for sure. It’s great to see camps reopening, vacations on the calendar, and the opportunity to enjoy our friends, family, and surroundings once again. I hope your family enjoys summer break, no matter what you have planned. Enjoy the time with your children, and I cross my fingers that summer won’t move too fast.
Things are looking bright as we look forward. I’m hopeful we can continue our march towards ‘normal’ and build on our current full day program. We have lots to be excited about.
I wish all our 5th grade students and families the best as you move on to Attea and Springman. The kids are ready for their next adventure. We will miss you.
Have a great summer everyone!!!
Erik
